R42 (A) Train + R42 Retirement Ceremonial Run

Posted by Transportation Hub on Fri Feb 14 22:29:30 2020

On February 12th, 2020, the MTA and the New York Transit Museum
ran the 1969 St. Louis Car Company R42 along the (A) Subway line.
The trip started from Euclid Ave to Far Rockaway, then up to Inwood-207th St, and lastly back down to Euclid Avenue. These cars are the second to last cars standing from the 1960s and the first ones to come with air conditioning. Glad to see these cars running for the very last time in existence after 50 years of phenomenal service to NYCT. Please enjoy this R42 farewell ceremonial video.

With these images of Pre-GOH R42s going around much more often these past few days, a question has come to me: how were these huge rollsigns? As in how well did they function or did they get stuck often, or were they more or less difficult to change than the current one or perhaps the same controls? Would be curious to know.

For one thing, they didn't contain all of the letters. There were groupings such as A, AA, B on one curtain, maybe they each had a black S on a white background too.

A, AA, B
CC, D
EE, GG, N (not sure on the GG)
E,F
JJ, KK, LL
QB, QJ, M (maybe M added later after the QJ/M switch?)
RJ, RR

Generally by yard, although not entirely. But you can see what would happen here, once a car is assigned you can't run it on another line and still have signs for it. Which of course is what happened as the subways deteriorated in the 70s. Any car that was operable was put into any train that was needed. This was true of the R40 through R46.

I went through the nycsubway.org site to see which cars were originally assigned, but I didn't save what I found. Just look at these cars in pictures from 1969 through like 1973 and you'll see the original assignments by numbers.

Ah, the "previous good old days of original subway graphics" those white porcelaine enamel signs on every station platform pillar, with the station name , most of the time abbreviated, in black and white capital letters

You are pretty much correct. GG was included with the EE and N and If I recall the side signs for the N readings included Continental as an north reading and both Whitehall and Canal as south readings since even while the EE was still running, there were plans in place to eventually ru the N to Qns Blvd which happened in 1976. The Eastern cars always had M also. I seem to recall that the cars with E and F also had A readings for the Rockaway shuttle service even though officially the Rockaway shuttles were designated HH.
