Sutphin and Archer. The courthouse up the block is a dead giveaway.

The most interesting feature of this pic is the Jamaica Ave elevated.
Those are R-1/9's on the el, during the 1950's, aren't they?

All winners here (as usual). Sutphin Blvd & Archer Ave is correct. Photo was taken in 1956.

Fantastic photo. For as long as I can remember (going back to the early '90's), that immediate area by the Jamaica transit hub has been pretty dumpy. and still is to this day. The pretense behind abandoning/dismantling the el north of Queens Blvd. was to remove the blight across Jamaica Ave, was it not?

Just curious if it was always like this for the older/wiser folk here.

Correct. There’s an excellent b & w picture of the theater in the lobby of the building at 89-00 Sutphin Boulevard. There are several other interesting historical photos there. Come take a look sometime.

They still had some of those when I moved away from NY in 1976. Don't know when they were finally removed.

Oh and the best part: This was on Liberty Av in East New York. One stretch (east of Pennsylvania Av, not sure how far east it went), they had lights at every other corner. If you were on Liberty, there would be a sign at the unsignalled intersection saying "Stop here when next signal is red". On a cross street with no signal, you had to stop, (look down the street at the next signal to see if it was green or red. If green you waited, if red you proceeded) Sounds ridiculous now. Glad I had not yet started driving when I lived in NYC.

Why were the traffic signals on Liberty Avenue the last to be upgraded to the standard RYG overhead on mast arm signals?

Don't know, after I left. Also, I should say that I was talking about not having a signal at eevery intersection. The signals that were there may very well have been 3 aspect signal heads, not 100% sure though.

If I recall when I started taking driving lessons in NYC in 1963, the driver’s manual actually had a chapter on what the various sequences of the old double signals meant.

"The pretense behind abandoning/dismantling the el north of Queens Blvd. was to remove the blight across Jamaica Ave, was it not?"

Correct. But the powers that be assumed that what happened with the EL's removal in Manhattan (real estate value booming etc.) would happen on Jamaica Ave. AFAIK, that never happened. Sure, the sun shone bright down on Jamaica Ave. but there was no massive demolition/construction akin to what happened on 2nd & 3rd Ave. Big named merchants suffered with the loss of this valuable transit link that was "replaced" by a slightly faster than footspeed Jamaica Ave Bus.
Hindsight: Removal of the Jamaica Ave El was a big mistake IMO, of course.

"there would be a sign at the unsignalled intersection saying "Stop here when next signal is red""

That's an interesting way to save money. I hope there isn't a truck in your line of sight.

" (look down the street at the next signal to see if it was green or red. If green you waited, if red you proceeded)"

Look down the cross street? Sounds fun with those giant hoods on those older cars.

It was a big mistake. When I went to St John's Univ in the late 1960's, downtown Jamaica was already in a decline. For some reason, they thought that removing that part Jamaica el would change things for the better. Did they really hope that someone was going to build nice office or residential structures there, like 2nd and 3rd Ave in Manhattan? It did not, just like removing the Bronx 3rd Ave el never improved those neighborhoods, either.
