PHOTOS: Eleven Years Ago

Posted by kp5308 on Fri Jan 17 21:38:23 2020

President-elect Barak Obama rode the Amtrak NEC from Philadelphia PA to Washington DC for his inauguration as the 44th President of the United States. A few of us decided to go to the SEPTA Prospect Park station to shoot the event. We got there about 2 hours before the special was due & staked out a spot on the east side of the tracks. Southbound twin Toasters:

CSX combine on the rear of an unknown NB long distance consist:

The 2 car pilot train was powered by 2 GE P42DCs running wrong main:

With #10002 Corridor Clipper on the rear. The car is ex-Amfleet I 84 seat coach #21191 and is outfitted with track geometry equipment plus catenary inspection hardware:

Shortly after it passed the Feds chased everybody to the other side of the tracks! The local cops were mad along with all of us but of course it didn't matter. The Obama Express was powered by #44 & #120:

With the man of the hour riding in John H. "Jack" Heard's business car Georgia 300. I was laying on my back on the platform when I took this shot. I was amazed it turned out as good as it did:

The bulls left before the clean up train passed about 15 minuets later. We made it back to the other side for a better sun angle to nab a pair of "P boats" with 5 cars:

Number 10001 Beech Grove carried the markers:

Vice President-elect Joe Biden was to be picked up in Wilmington DE so we zoomed down I-95 to Newark where it was quite a different scene. Thousands lined both sides of the tracks:

Including UAW workers from the nearby Chrysler plant:

No chasin' us away down here so after 3 southbounds passed, highlighted by the Crescent:

Here comes the pilot train. BTW that is dormitory car Pacific Command behind the locomotives:

Originally the train with the soon to be White House occupants was to be 4 Amfleet (2 coach & 2 café) plus the private car. It ended up at 7 coach, 2 café and the 300:

The crowd pushed onto the tracks where I was located when the heavyweight car passed so I didn't get a shot of the rear of the train. Biden was on the platform waving and from what I was later told the Secret Service along with who knows how many other federal "agents" were NOT happy with what happened here:

Ten minuets later here comes the clean up train...the coaches & café were occupied mostly by the media:

Beech Grove is ex-Amfleet 1 84 seat coach #21222. It was reconfigured as a full service business car in 1984:

And then it was back to an empty Newark DE platform & the same old junk:

It wasn't like Joe just hopped on during a 5 minute stop at Wilmington...c'mon Brian! Anyway I-95 South provides a good view of the station so when we drove by & I saw all 3 sets there I knew we were gonna make Newark with ease. IIRC 3 southbounds passed before the "motorcade". I believed if traffic didn't become a factor we could pull it off. And we did. :)
