Coating to an Inch how will the 7 handle it?

Posted by Lou from Brooklyn on Wed Jan 15 12:32:07 2020

So we are expecting snowfall of a coating to an inch. If you recall December 2nd and 11th the Flushing line didn't handle that too well with the computer losing the location of where trains were so MAS was reduced to 25 mph.

So how well will $600 million system handle the next storm?
Have all the plastic covers been installed?

Canarsie line has handled the snow but that CBTC system was built by a different manufacture.

In weather like that they should just turn the CBTC off.

With CBTC off, the trains would run even slower. The system wasn't designed to flip flop back and forth between conventional signaling and CBTC.

and yet that entire outdoor stretch on the L didn't have a problem.

I mean, Byford said "DO IT NOW!", I would assume if they like contracts with NYCTA they'd have done it...

There are just enough signals between Broadway Junction and Canarsie to allow non-CBTC trains to access the car wash at Canarsie Yard without interfering with train service too badly.

Almost everything I've seen discussed here is critical of CBTC's reliability as compared to wayside signals. Is this system really any good?
Are there any other transit systems where CBTC compares favorably to or better than, wayside signal systems?

Last time I was out there the outdoor section has AWS so it can run service on the conventional signals.

Regularly spaces signals had to be removed since CBTC does not depend on fixed blocks but on actual distance between trains. A few conventional signals spaced long distances apart had to be retained for the occasional non CBTC equipped trains such as work equipment that might need to operate there.

It’s a sad day when 1 inch of slushy snow can paralyze an elevated subway line.

Even though there are a few wayside signals, they are placed farther apart than conventional signals so that the same level of service cannot be operated using them exclusively.

The AWS can handle about 3 tph. CBTC cannot handle switches, so an AWS is required to handle them. The AWS essentially has blocks between the switches.
