With CBTC off, the trains would run even slower. The system wasn't designed to flip flop back and forth between conventional signaling and CBTC. |

Regularly spaces signals had to be removed since CBTC does not depend on fixed blocks but on actual distance between trains. A few conventional signals spaced long distances apart had to be retained for the occasional non CBTC equipped trains such as work equipment that might need to operate there. |

CBTC cannot handle switches, so an AWS is required to handle them. The AWS essentially has blocks between the switches. |
