12-9 @ Fulton St (2) (3) platform; 2-year old boy dead; delays on (4)(5)

Posted by Gold_12th on Wed Dec 11 19:58:10 2019

A 2-year-old boy was killed when he was struck by a subway train at Lower Manhattan’s Fulton Street station on Wednesday evening, authorities said.

The boy was struck along the 2/3 line at the sprawling transit hub around 5:35 p.m., officials and police sources said.

It was not immediately clear whether the child fell on the tracks and was run over, or clipped while standing on the platform, officials said.

The victim was rushed to New York Downtown hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to authorities.

The horrific incident snarled service along the line, as well as the 4/5 line at the height of the evening rush, according to the MTA.

What was going on with the parent - all should be watchful of their children on subway platforms.... especially that young - letting a toddler run or walk freely on a platform? :(

I wasn't there, so I don't know the situation at all. The above are just my first thoughts.

Nobody noticed a 2-year old kid running free before a train hit him?

I heard a news brief on 710AM this morning claiming 20 transit workers pushed the train to remove him. I gather he was pinched between train and platform edge.

There will be no platform doors in New York.

The boy was with his mother and they got parted in the crowding. People must have pushed between them without even seeing the kid there.

ROAR

Thank you for these details. I remember as a child of 5 or 6 going in to work with my Dad. When we were in thick rush hour crowds, Queens Plaza in the AM on the Lex platform in the pm, yes, there was aggressive crowd pushing that could have gotten us separated. I remember being scared at my whole body being pushed away from my Dad, and I held on to his hand for dear life; and never got separated from him that I can remember.

Why not?

Just get rid of 75 foot cars and there is no obstacle.

I love the subway . This is the reason people buy suvs . It’s to protect their children . My little one won’t see the inside of a subway station until he is well over 2 years old . With the current criminal justice reform (aka let the criminals run free to terrorize the general public ) not sure if I will take him on a subway at all

That is a very busy station complex as it has been for many years during rush hours anything can happen in an instant. A similar accident happened on an East Harlem street corner where a child got run over by a pickup truck. Children have a lot of energy and it's hard for a parent to keep them from running ahead. I came close to hitting one riding on a bicycle backing out of my driveway. The boy was riding ahead of his mother who was talking on a cell phone. Fortunately I saw him when I turned around to look and he was barely visible but I stopped in time to see him pass my rear bumper.

Was it not reported that the child was in a stroller when he was struck by an unlicensed driver?

The child wasn't actually in the stroller. The driver was unlicensed and arrested and charged by the police.

Well, there is always that.

I meant insurmountable obstacle. Money can be found by sacrificing other projects.

PS. I don't actually see platform doors as being a good use of money. I was just asking why the categorical statement.
