PHOTOS: Amtrak train 1054 with MARC coaches Sunday

Posted by chuchubob on Sun Dec 1 17:53:02 2019

On previous Thanksgiving Sundays, Amtrak leased two trainsets each from NJ Transit and MARC (Maryland Area Regional Commuter) and numbered them in the 10xx series, calling them "Holiday Extras". This year they leased two sets of MARC coaches and no NJ Transit equipment. The extras were called "Holiday Commuter" this year.
I got marginal photos of train 1054 departing 30th Street Station for New York in heavy overcast and rain. The second train would have arrived at Philly after dark even without the rain.
An Amfleet cafe car brought up the rear.

I'm so bummed they don't use the HHP8 on these runs anymore.

extra trains get usually covered by extra list, so just imagine a hhp8 on train but engineer not qualified cause he has no seniority.

They don't use MARC's MLV cars either, even though they could fit through all the tunnels. They do have crappy luggage capabilities.

It's been long enough now that no engineer is current on them probably.

No way then can use MLVs for these trains unless they only sell half the seats. Barely room for an empty backpack in the overhead racks on those let alone actual luggage.

On NJT, I see the awkwardness of people getting on at EWR rail station headed east with their steamer trunks and kitchen sinks while others are positioning themselves to get off at Newark Penn.

not sure of Amtrak, but on Metro North an Engineer never looses qualification on engine type only territory.

well passengers returning from a 4 day weekend do not generally carry lots of luggage , unless they took the left overs.

The MLVs seem to have a few terrible design choices which have made things more awkward or cramped than they need to be:
1 - some LIRR C3s have an extra luggage area on the bottom level in place of the seats towards the center of the car. MLVs should have done this. Combine this with turning all the seats so they face the center of the car, to allow everyone to be able to keep an eye on their luggage. Keep the upper level the way it is. Ideally people would go to the lower level if they have large luggage, and the upper level if they only need the tiny overhead rack.

2 - LIRR C3s have the "interior space" of the car going right up to the bulkhead, possible only due to the 100% high platform nature of the LIRR. The MLVs have an issue where the end doors are barely used and the quarter point doors are overloaded at high platform stations. Solution: delete the low platform end door from the non-restroom end of the car, and enlarge the high platform door at that end. This newly reclaimed interior space on the mid-level will add room for airport / luggage customers. This change will really only be a problem at Hoboken - they should raise one or two platforms to high level at Hoboken and try to steer MLV arrivals towards them, and track 13 (which can have both sides opened up).
