MetroNorth Park Av track configuration questions

Posted by gbs on Thu Nov 28 22:23:48 2019

Entering the portal at 97 St & Park Av, the four tracks are side by side. Do they remain like that all the way down to below 60 St when they start branching off? Where does the lower level of tracks begin? Do two of these four tracks become the lower level pair?

If the tracks are below only the gardens along Park Av, they seem wide enough for only two tracks.

Are there any track diagrams available that clearly show the configuration?

All 4 tracks can access either lower or upper levels. They stay on the same level side by side until they start to branch below the 59th St. emergency exits. The tracks under Park are not only under the gardens but also the street roadways.

Check out the Wikipedia article on GCT. There is the well-known 1909 track layout, but you can also click on a link further down the right side that reads "Grand Central Track layout" and it shows a modern graphic of the layout.

Footnote 186 to the Wiki article also has the official MNRR track charts that include GCT's configuration.

Historically the medians were as wide as the tunnel below, but the medians were narrowed around the 1920s to allow additional car lanes.

Thanks for the information, it's just what I wanted to know. (I almost didn't open the other two posts, thinking they were just repetitions.)

Amazing how much it's changed. The only building I can recognize in that picture is St. Bart's on the right, placing this pic between 50th and 51st Streets.

The four tracks remain intact until they reach CP1 approx. at the location of the unused 59th Street platforms. From east to west the nos. are 3-1-2-4.

There they split up into the ten trunk tracks for GCT. From east to west these are designated A-B-C-D-E-F-G-H-I-J. Tracks A-B-F and J descend to the lower level.

Some of the tracks had nick names; A was subway, B was alley, C was outside and D was regular. On eastward (southbound) moves track F was designated as "below". A move from track 2 to track F was called as "2-below".

This was the setup when I worked at Tower U back in the seventies. Today Track A is no longer in service.

Make Park Av a Park Again.

While they're at it, take out one traffic lane from each of the Avenues and add 5 feet of sidewalk to each side. Also, ban people from obstructing sidewalks (hawking wares) in crowded areas.

It's gotten to the point where simply walking in Manhattan is annoying as all fuck...

Have you seen what they've allowed to happen at the entrance to the pedestrian walkway on the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge? As if it's not crowded enough with tourists, there are booths all up the ramp, including at the choke points at the stairs. I can't believe they're all licensed to be there, so why don't the police clear them out?

Or maybe since last fall when I saw this they've done something about it....
