PHOTOS: new Paoli station

Amtrak recently rebuilt the passenger station at Paoli. Photos from yesterday. Center platform where tracks 2 and 3 used to be, serving tracks 1 and 4.

Sad. Massive population loss must've resulted in a 50% reduction in track services.
Wonder if the highways will start losing lanes too.

This was the PRR freight main line as well as passenger. Norfolk Southern freight trains run on the former Reading between Philly and Harrisburg.

Is NS using another track, then? Removing track 2 and 3 here can't be good for that.

Never mind, I misread your original message. But that begs a couple of other questions: does that mean freight no longer travels along the PRR main? And what's going to happen to tracks 2 and 3 over the rest of the main?

NS runs on the former Reading, not Amtrak (former PRR). NS operates some locals on Amtrak's Keystone Corridor in the Lancaster area.

I noticed something.

They built this thing to be high platform, for level boarding I guess. But, instead of going up like 3 or 4 steps or whatever on a train, I gotta walk up and down how many dozens to get level?
Good exercise I suppose.

If you think this is overbuilt, check out any road bridge or overpass. Anything that used to be 2 lanes without a shoulder gets to be twice as tall, and about 5 lanes wide, just for the 2 lanes.

Yes, but with 2 side platforms, in one direction or the other, you had to go up and over to get to the other side to or form your car or house.

Paoli was the end of commuter service. West of the station was the Paoli SHop,s which maintained the entire MP54 fleet, wherever they ran, whether New York - Trenton, Balto-Washington, or the various Philly commuter branches. When they tore down the shops, it was a hell of a Superfund PCB site that had to be cleaned up.

That's not a good comparison. Highways do that to increase capacity (of course, to increase congestion); Amtrak does this to constrict the possibility of expansion on what is supposed to be a federally-designated high-speed rail corridor.

Not by a long shot.

And this reduces a four-track main to two tracks. Remember, this is supposed to be a federal high speed corridor.

Depends on what you consider a highway.

US-20 through the city of Albany (where it is Madison Ave) had its 4 lanes reduced to 2 with a center turn lane and 2 dedicated bike lanes.

HSR or not, Amtrak trains would still stop at Paoli, and it is Penn DOT's call as to where they stop.

PennDOT doesn't own the Main Line. Amtrak does. Can't be PennDOT's call then except where Amtrak agrees in terms of funding agreements. Guess PennDOT is an impediment to high speed rail then, presuming that's the case, eh?

Penn-DOT determines whether there is any Keystone or Pennsylvanian service at all, how many trains per day, and where they stop.

The Keystone trains hit 106 MPH further west, despite Paoli. East of Paoli is one curve after another.

That's nice, but the average speed is the determining factor. Should any future goal of increasing average speed appear on the horizon, Paoli in its current form hampers it.

Which Wikipedia is that? Not this one, which calls it a "census-designated place" that straddles two townships (Willistown and Tredyffrin) and in one place says it was once a "town" albeit without any citations.

Your own source, Wikipedia, says they do not.

Paoli /peɪˈoʊliː/ is a census-designated place in Chester County near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. It is situated in portions of two townships: Tredyffrin and Willistown. At the 2010 census, it had a total population of 5,575.
