Tuscarora Almanac – November 16, 1946 – The Book of Last Runs

Third Avenue Transit Corporation

This is the last day of operation for the 42nd Street trolley line. Cars were assigned to the 54th Street Car Barn and carried a large letter “X” on the front dash sign. TrolleyS will be replaced by the M-106 bus line. (Today’s M-42).

Streetcars will be replaced by the M-105 bus line.

Tuscarora Almanac – November 16, 1947 – The Book of First Runs

Lincoln, Nebraska
Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad

The Burlington launches a new passenger train. It is called the “Nebraska Zephyr”, Nos. 11 and 12. The train will run between Chicago, Illinois and Lincoln, Nebraska in an eight and a half hours. The equipment will come from the former 1936 “Twin Cities Zephyr”.

When Amtrak started up in 1971, one of the Nebraska Zephyr trainsets now resides (and runs regularly) at the Illinois Railway Museum. I believe that the other set went to Saudi Arabia, where it ran in passenger service for several more years.
