Shutting down the fast food joints? Besides the trains, that is the best part on Penn Station.

It's the fast food joins in the LIRR concourse, not the whole station while the works takes place. That area needs the work.

That's unfortunate. I hope when all is said and done, it will have been worth the inconvenience.

During the PM crush hour, ever attempt walking to the IRT 1-2-3 subway ? It's like trying to penetrate a stampede.

Yeah, if it were up to me I'd rip out all the commercial establishments on the LIRR concourse and use that space to make the concourse wider.

Yeah, but they'd lose all that rent $$$. I'll guess that Amtrak gets the rent money since its their sandbox & not the MTA's

I guess there goes K-Mart's direct connection to the concourse.

No more pizza or pretzels for commuters on the run.

They missed what's more important - NO MORE CHEAP BEER!! The Amtrak level has maybe two places that sell beer (Rite Aid and the deli that's owned by Pizza Don Pepi) and it ain't cheap at the latter... that Rite Aid will be swamped.

My routine has been grabbing a slice of Rose's Pizza. Now I'll have to settle on something on the Amtrak cocourse.

The article suggests the retail space will return eventually.

Some 17 merchants on the concourse’s Vornado-controlled north side — including Shake Shack, two Starbucks branches, Papyrus, Godiva, Pret a Manger and Le Bon Cafe — will be taken “out of service next year for a couple of years,” a transcript of the call revealed. No more pizza or pretzels for commuters on the run.

I like the Rose's pizza close to 8th ave because it has a nice large seating area that is rarely crowded. And, craft beer on tap.

Definitely not. The LIRR can handle having the shopping concourse. Especially since unlike Grand Central which has a whole section of shops useless to commuters (the east side), every LIRR one is worthwhile and well patronized. Yes, even Pret.

People who don't like crowds can use the center hallway between tracks 12 & 13 to get between 8th and 7th ave, or use the new West End concourse.

The Grand Central Market shops on the east side are not directly on most people's route, but they are extremely well patronized.

The article mentions that the 17 businesses are in the "Vornado controlled" portion of the station, presumably being under the footprint of the 1 Penn Plaza complex. So the rental income, or the bulk of it, would likely go to Vornado realty, not Amtrak or MTA.

Yup! The more popular one is near K-mart. The one I'm referring to seems to have taken over the space formerly held by the large convenience store, or is very close to that spot.

I read the part about the "Vornado controlled" situation. However, I find it hard to believe that either Amtrak or the MTA do not get a substantial percentage of the gross of their income. I'm sure that if there is a buck to be made from all the retail tenants in NYP, either Amtrak or the MTA has figured out a way to get a hand in the cookie jar.

Considering what's going on with K-Mart that may be an irrelevant point soon.
