Conn. governor’s $21B transportation plan includes improvements to Metro-North Railroad

Posted by TransitChuckG on Fri Nov 8 09:20:16 2019

Written by Bill Wilson, Editor-in-Chief

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont wants to spend $4 billion on Metro-North Railroad.
Going from 80 to 50 to 14 might be the right sequence for Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont. When Lamont first unveiled his transportation plan, he wanted to go overboard on tolling, which did not sit well with the state legislature. On Nov. 7 the governor called for 14 tolls that would help fund a 10-year, $21 billion transportation spending proposal, with $4 billion going towards improvements for the Metro-North Railroad.

Lamont wants to cut the rail travel time from New Haven to Manhattan by 30 minutes. To do that $2.25 billion will be used to replace the aging bridges on the New Haven line, which are traffic chokepoints. New rail cars, at a cost of $1 billion, will help reach speeds of 110 mph.

Low-interest federal loans and the 14 toll locations will be used to help finance the plan. State lawmakers will now vote on the measure, but that might not happen until they return to the state Capitol in February.

The reduced qty of tolls is just a teaser.
He just increase them after the first group gets in.

Typical democrat … not dealing with delicate, because it's more important to spend more :-(

They sure love to spend, don't they. And I don't believe that 110-mph figure one bit.

So will the Acelas be able to travel at high speeds too? Imagine getting to Boston in less than three hours.

This will take decades, and I'd be surprised if I were still alive by the time the bridges are all replaced. Perhaps some new technology will arrive before then to actually make our present mechanized transportation modes obsolete, too, or has the human spirit of invention actually dissipated?

CT should have never gotten rid of the tolls on its TURNPIKE to begin with. It's led to a lack of transportation funding ever since.

Will they be bringing back tolls on I-95 with discounts for CT E-ZPass holders? I have not heard too much about this, recently.

I assume so. The road should be toll enabled due to its status as a pre-interstate state turnpike.

You know of a way to replace/improve infrastructure without spending?

Where will you put new transportation modes? This isn't the 1800's.

Are tolls on I-95 a separate thing from these proposed tolls elsewhere?

Sounds like he started with a big ask @ 80 tolls and walked it back.

As for the speed, they should be aiming for 100 rather than 110, so no new railcars are needed and the pricetag can be reduced. The M8 is limited to 100, and afaik no commuter rail in North America has faster speeds (NJT is 100). Going from 70 to 100 is a fantastic enough speed increase.

Good point, forgot about MARC. And their Charger replacements will do the same.

Not for long, unless they find someone to maintain them. Meanwhile, they don't run them at that speed, and the diesel trains that run on the Penn Line don't run on a slower schedule.

His orig plan was for tolls on 95, 15, 91, 84
i.e. all major highways in CT
you would get a discount with a CT E-Z Pass
