The videos were hilarious.
1. There was one where everyone was yelling at a woman who glued herself to the train.
2. The protesters getting yanked off the roof of the train within 40 seconds of unfurling their stupid sign:

3. Bonus: everyone watching the footage at a bar:

One would think (as I heard a commuter pointing out) that they would like public transport, especially the electric kind. In any event, Londoners seem to have dealt with them!

Extinction Rebellion isn't an actual environmental advocacy group. It's a group of idiots LARPing as environmental activists because they want to look like they're doing something about the impending climate catastrophe without actually bothering to do anything.

They've actually gotten so bad that Green and Black Cross, an organisation which provides legal support to protestors, has issued a (rare) public statement telling them they're on their own.

Apparently, Extinction Rebellion has been giving their members legal tips based on American law, and even developed legal strategies out of what they saw in movies.

It's difficult to get Twitter videos to play on here. But it's worth my effort.

Thank you. What was annoying is the embed worked fine in the subchat preview but failed when actually posting.

After no one ever comments and noticing that myself, I wonder if Twitter is what strips it after the first view.

But SOMEBODY must be paying their bills. I mean, these people find ways to travel and eat- while not being meaningfully employed...

How do you know that they aren't meaningfully employed? Some people who work for a living are nuts too. It isn't necessarily the exact same people at each protest.

And yes, one or more wealthy people is probably donating to their cause. But probably more for expenses than to actually support the protestors.

Your correction is itself incorrect. There's nothing religious about them, and while they likely cast themselves as the heroes of their own narrative, it doesn't quite fit into the fairy tale genre.

On technical grounds I agree.
But the way people in politics and in hollywood (and some here) describe so-called "religion", it looks like they're describing these folks.

I work for the State of NY, so I'll agree with your premise that lots of totally insane people are nevertheless employed; many of them are my direct colleagues.

But the issue is TIME - a person with a real job or business doesn't have time to travelling around the world disrupting things.

I haven't kept up to date with how Hollywood describes religion. But I do know there are religious crazies and nonreligious crazies and even some explicitly atheistic crazies. Meanwhile, there are good religious people, good nonreligious people, and good explicit atheists. Religion is kind of a nonfactor in these calculations.

I beg to differ. Years ago, I took part in nonviolent direct action to raise awareness about the killings of gay people in NYC, which that year had risen to a level not seen since the 1960s. We briefly shut Grand Central Terminal down in a "die-in". Among us were professionals, blue-collar workers, and students.

Guess what? It worked. People felt it, and the following month, the city finally got serious about investigating and prosecuting the murders of LGBTQ people in the city. Before our little demonstration, cases like Rashawn Brazell, a young gay man killed and dismembered in the Fulton Street subway tunnel (parts of his body were found wrapped in NYCT-issue garbage bags between Nostrand and Kingston-Throop), were all but ignored.

It took the NYPD another eleven years to find a suspect, even though the killer left clues everywhere. As Brazell was a "socially unacceptable" victim, the cops didn't assign real resources to his case; there were other, higher-status murders to investigate.

My point is, this is how mass protest works. It's how Dr. King killed Jim Crow, and it's how meaningful change is brought about today. People don't respond to social issues until it affects them in some way. In Montgomery, bus revenue plummeted; in NYC, wealthy people missed their trains. In both cases, the desired result was achieved.

The Extinction Rebellion protests differ from your reference in that their demands are not clearly formulated, and to the extent that they are formulated (namely, just reduce economic activity to reduce CO2 production), they are far from being the only way to solve the problem.

Extinction Rebellion and Westboro Baptist Church certainly have a few thematic similarities. Both are entirely performative; the goal is not to change society but rather to convince someone that their "real" goal is to change society. It's the superficial motions of protest without the underlying goals, for the purpose of establishing personal reputation as "protestors."

Other than that, though, they're different in more ways than just religious/secular; they also differ in the ostensible "goal" they use as a pretext for their fake protests, and they differ in precisely which people they're putting on the performance for.
