The soda vending machines in the subway cost a dime. A cup, syrup and seltzer were each to come down in that order. Many times it didn't. You had to write a note the company and they would refund your money. But it would cost a $0.04 stamp.Wasn't worth it. |

The Woolworth's on 63 Drive in Rego Park had a similar soda vending machine. For a nickel you could buy a cup of soda, but on many more than one occasion you would watch no cup come down and then the syrup and seltzer would squirt right down the drain. All you could do was watch in surprise and frustration. At many Horn & Hardart automats you would buy a glass of milk by first putting a glass under the spout and then depositing your nickel. Occasionally someone would forget to put the glass in place and after depositing the nickel would watch the milk squirt right down the drain. |
