LIRR to replace East Hampton rail bridges

Posted by Broadway Lion on Tue Oct 15 15:13:01 2019

MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) crews today began the final stage of work to replace two century-old rail bridges in East Hampton, New York, at North Main Street and Accabonac Road.

LIRR will raise the vertical roadway clearance of the bridges with the installation of single span steel bridge structures to allow trucks to safely pass underneath the bridges.

The North Main Street Bridge currently has a posted clearance of 10 feet, and the Accabonac Road Bridge has a posted clearance of 9-feet-9-inches. The low-hanging bridges have been the site of many accidents caused by oversized trucks striking the bridges, LIRR officials said in a press release.

Buses will substitute train service during construction.

How is that increase to vertical height done, I guess depress the road , that's a big job.

Depressing the road 3 or 4' would likely destabilize the overpass supports.

Then they will raise the tracks, instead .

When you suspend all rail service for 27 days, you can get a big job done.

What was the design clearance, horse and carriage, or horse and midget?

Many bridges were built so long ago, that have low height clearances. There is a Penna. RR bridge near me on Whithford Rd. that is really low...8'8' or something like that.

If the bridges were built a long time ago, shouldn't metal fatigue be taken into consideration as a reason for replacement ? These things do not last forever, and safety should be on all minds here.

The Broadway el over Fulton Street has been standing for nearly 140 years, albeit reinforced. Just about as long as The Brooklyn Bridge.

Probably more of an issue for iron than steel.
