PHOTOS: SMS 25th Anniversary

Posted by kp5308 on Tue Oct 8 20:43:54 2019

On Saturday October 5th SMS had their inaugural "Wheels & Rails Car Show" at their Bridgeport NJ headquarters in cooperation with New Jersey Operation Lifesaver. CSX sent their 3 “Pride in Service” GE widecabs for the event. All were repainted at the Huntington (WV) shop.
ES44AC-H #1776 (ex-#3112 built by GE in 2013) honors the military with a digital camouflage scheme. The locomotive was painted this past April:

Also done in April was ES44AC-H #911 (GE 2008) honoring first responders:

ES44AC-H #3194 (GE 2013) is a Tier 4 Credit locomotive (Pop tier 4 credit locomotives into Google for more info) that was released in August 2019 honoring law enforcement:

The SMS Baldwin show was also on display. AS616 (All Service-6 traction motors-1600 HP) #554 is
Ex-Trona #54, exx-Kaiser Steel #1012B. This model would end up being the best selling Baldwin road switcher at 221 engines. The 554 retains the 608SC prime mover, Westinghouse electricals and last I checked it still had the Westinghouse brake. This ‘un was built in 1952 and is the last operable Baldwin 6 axle left.

PRR DS4-4-1000 (Diesel Switcher-4 axles-4 traction motors-1000HP) #9069 was built 1949 and is the real deal. SMS fired up the 6 cylinder 606 supercharged diesel from time to time during the day:

However B&O #412 is not the real deal. The VO1000 (De La Vergne model VO 6 cylinder inline supercharged-1000HP) was built for the Navy and numbered 19 in '45. This would be the best selling (548) BLW switcher :

This S12 (Switcher-1200HP) was built in 1953 for Michigan Limestone as #116. A supercharged 606A provides the HP and, like the 2 previous switchers Westinghouse provides the electrical equipment & brake system :

Owner Bobb Losse & hired hand Elliott Moxley were giving tours of the ex Louisville & Nashville FA2 they are restoring. Originally L&N #309 (Alco 1956), the cab unit was acquired by the Long Island & modified for duty as a cab car/HEP source & numbered 602. Much work needs to be completed before it gets the Pennsylvania freight cab unit treatment (Brunswick Green with a single stripe) complete with trainphone antenna hardware. Elliott tells me that the prime mover is a model 250 (or 244H) 12 cylinder w turbo and is very similar to an RS11 mechanically:

An EMD invader! The Carneys Point SW1200 was built for the Katy as SW900 #1229 in 1952:

The ex-Santa B23-7 was earning money switching while the event took place:

Personally I thought the attendance would be better than this:

Of course I got stopped by a train in Blandon PA on the way home. This was a MONSTER NS intermodal featuring double & single stack containers plus TOFC...but no DPU either in the middle or on the rear:

Nice show, thanks for the photo tour Kevin. When I first saw VO1000's like B&O 412 I was told that the VO stood for Very Old....

That's interesting. I thought that when the LIRR converted some of their locomotives to cabs/HEP, they removed some or all of the engine innards. But enough was left in the FA2 for it to be restored back into a locomotive?

Good coverage, Kevin. The classic car that caught my eye was this 1911 Stanley Steamer.

The LI cab car fleet was modified to various degrees based on condition. The ex-L&N units were part of the last FA2 order & were pretty well maintained. There is a Long Island Cab Car site out there that goes into detail about the different conversions.

That's the site! The 309 presently has traction motors but I don't know if the trucks were replaced with complete rebuilds or had TMs installed in the originals.

You're welcome. Double whammy, the 412 number also hit the funny bone. For the young'uns a popular cop show in the 50's was Dragnet. Actor Jack Webb played the star, Sgt. Joe Friday, as an absolutely stone faced emotionless persona. In later years it became a light joke. Stan Freburg who was known for funny songs on pop radio did a satire on Dragnet, having Friday investigating the old "St George slaying the maiden devouring dragon" fable. After arresting the the dragon he does his usual citing of the charge, a 502, devouring maidens out of season. The dragon goes into a big emotional protest and Friday charges him again, this time with a 412. The dragon goes into a bigger burst of emotion screaming "412 what's a 412" to which cold voiced Friday replies "overacting".

When I refreshed my memory of Freburg's song I found that the older railfans on RailPages.AU had also taken up up the dragon's chant just as we did out west here. So in the 60's putting up your B&O shot would have brought a loud, protesting "412? what's a 412?" from the audience.

Good memories, Bill

Ah, the St. George parody - I have the original 45 rpm, remember that dialogue well! Very funny!

There were several more of those Stan Freberg parodies on 45 records. I never had them, but either my 7th grade algebra teacher or a classmate brought them to class, to play the day before the Christmas holidays (1962!) when it wasn't uncommon for one or more classes to have a little party during that period instead of a lesson.

Didn't add this little tidbit: all the FAs that came to Reading had their ALCO prime movers. IIRC 4 of them made the trip but I don't have the LI numbers. We were going to do the rebuilding at the Erection Hall but shortly after they arrived we lost the lease & couldn't raise the money to buy the building. Reading Tech moved to Leesport PA and the stuff owned by other entities (like the FAs) also had to go. I was looking forward to helping out with that project :(

About those three FA's in those two photos I posted, can you make out the numbers ?

I think I see #601 & #602. Can't make out the one with the red front numbered #596.
