So when CBTC is up and running, will wayside signals gradually be taken out of service and removed, or kept in operation as emergency backup?

The foamers have been talking about this for YEARS. It is to get the R46 cars off QBl for CBTC. CI R160's would be reassigned to facilitate CBTC on the E/F/R.

By the time it's installed, tested and ready to go. the R211's could be here. Therefore why discuss something that is likely not to be needed?

Jamaica has gotten more 46s as more and more 179 A trains enter service.

The MTA might want to get all the NTTs to Qns Blvd to get the passengers used to a fleet of 100% 60 ft cars with bowling alley seating even before it becomes an absolute necessity.

In all likelihood some will be kept in place like on the Flushing and 14 St Lines in the event that a non CBTC equipped train has to be rerouted there until such time as either there is only NTT equipment on the entire system or some way can be developed to equip the older cars with CBTC capability.

It may end up that some displaced R-46s will also displace some R-68s and 68As from the Southern Division. Logically it would make the most sense to have the R-46s on lines that have changes of terminals during the course of the day like the B which alternates Bed Pk and 145 as north terminals ot eh N and W which frequently swaps equipment at Ditmars. Eventually, some R-46s will probably return to the A freeing the R-179s to go to Queens. That leaves the R-68s and 68As which would be best on lines that never change terminals like the C, the D and G where they already are, and the Q. As I mentioned in another post, considering the amenities and upgrades the R-46 received during GOH, I wouldn’t be too surprised to see the R-68s go first ahead of the R-46s.

If you can stand another nit picky point, let me make a small correction. The swap of cars does not involve the yards. In actuality, the cars are assigned to a maintenance shop/facility so the swap is between the (barns) maintenance shops.

The easiest way to do it would be to bring an R-46 F layup at the end of the PM rush into CIY and replace it with an R-160 for the next day’s service. With the R Line lay up an R-46 to JYd overnight and put it into F service the next day swapping it with an R-160. Since some Rs also lay up to CIYd an R-46 R layup could easily be swapped over for an R-160 either midday or overnight.

Correct but since CIYd and JYd are both maintenance facilities, the distinction in this case is insignificant. Now if you are talking Fresh Pond Yd that would be different since F/P has no barn or shop.

There are many levels of management in the TA. There used to be Deputy Supt, Supt , and District General Supt. I believe that the Deputy Supt title has been eliminated and the road titles changed to Supt and Supt in Charge while to higher titles remained the same. While there areas of management may differ, they are all still managers of one kind or another.
