They will probably do something similar to what was done at Metrotech and construct the elevator shafts past the platform ends at the S/E

That's going to be hard to do at 14th St. The stairs to the L pretty much are the end of the platform, and you can't go around the stairs by widening the platform because PATH is on the other side of the wall.

The IND mezzanines do extend across 14 St. One thing they could do is have elevators going from the middle of the up and downtown IND platforms up to the IND mezzanines, enlarging the mezzanines at 14 St and installing 2 additional elevators going from the mezzanines to the BMT island platform. In this way they would bypass the stairs at south ends of the IND platforms.

Good point, but wouldn't that mean putting the passageways under 14th St inside fare control? There are also some steps around the passageways that may need to be dealt with.

And yet both of these stations were renovated within the last 10-15 years.

Because they decided that deep bore is less disruptive than cut and cover. This may have made the work cheaper also.

Of course, now that the work is done, the disruption would be over regardless, but we're stuck with the inconvenience of deep stations.
