No (N) trains to Coney Island starting October 21, 2019 to Spring 2020

Déjà vu again...

Preparing for Climate Change: Protecting the Coney Island Yard
There will be no N trains between 86 St Brooklyn and Coney Island-Stillwell October 21, 2019 to Spring 2020

The Coney Island Yard, the tracks that serve it, the car wash, repair, and maintenance facilities within it, and the infrastructure that runs through it are critical to our subway operations. The location of the yard provides ideal access to multiple subway lines, but it's vulnerable to flooding. With intense weather events like Superstorm Sandy expected to occur more often, we need to act now to protect this vital part of our system, so we can keep trains running safely.

To do the work to protect the yard as efficiently and safely as possible, we need uninterrupted access to the track. This means that between October 21, 2019, and Spring 2020, there will be no N trains between 86 St and Coney Island-Stillwell Av. You'll want to transfer to the D and the F, or use the B1 and B4 buses to complete your trip. Here's what we're doing and how you'll get around while we work.

Are they raising the trackbeds and minding drainage? If so, smart.

BUT, hurricanes are nothing new, it's just a question of when X scrap of land will get hit by one at the time of high tide. A high-tide repeat of the Long Island storm in the '30s would have flooded CIY and caused massive damage.

"intense weather events like Superstorm Sandy expected to occur more often"
This statement far exceeds what I expect from a public agency, it is actually true, and it was worded without hype. Intense flooding events have happened before, and the world is not collapsing. Now with slightly higher and gradually increasing temps plus 8-15" base sea level rise (ground has sunk in some places) above the 18th century level, the net result is more storms will make it into the intense category. When that intensity exceeds the design defense of historic structures, the results can be dramatic and big $$ damage. The next Sandy could be in 10 years or another 100 (but probably sooner), the time to prep for it is now.
They got a lot of information into one statement, which is the exact opposite of what government usually does.

Graphics asleep yet again: It shows the B4 route turning to 86th Street on the wrong street; it actually turns east from Stillwell. People looking at this map may assume the 4 runs longer along 86 Street.

How are they shopping the N if the lead tracks are cut? Or are they going to use that single tail track just south of 86th for yard moves?

In many cases, "100 year" events are occurring every 10 years or so. So yes, another Sandy is quite likely to occur in less than 100 years.
