I Finally Got to See the Electronic Solari Board at Newark Penn Station

Posted by heypaul on Thu Aug 22 16:50:13 2019

I've been wanting to see the new Solari Style Destination board at Newark Penn Station for over a year. I finally went today.

New Solari Style board

The status column changes quite often and that is pretty good. But when the main body refreshes it's much too fast.

I liked the old board much better

I had a strange experience on PATH going to Newark. As the train pulled into Newark, it went into emergency 8 different times. It recharged, went forward for about 5 seconds and dumped its air. I think there was trouble with a signal that was causing this.

Would the new board qualify as a skeuomorph? (I owe this useful term to somebody on SubChat, but I’ve forgotten who.)

"Skeuomorph" was not one of the words I memorized when I prepared for the English SAT's. After looking the word up now, I think the new Newark board is skeuomorphic.

It's entertaining, but why would they want to electronically simulate a Solari board?

I've asked myself this a number of times. There's even a loudspeaker playing clacking sounds.

As far as the flapping sounds, I've seen suggestions that it alerts passengers to changes on the board.

For those of us that dwell in the past, it's very important.

As I stated in my original post about the new board, it changes too fast.I slowed it down some

I just noticed that the destination plates are arranged alphabetically, although the entire name changes as one unit.

Interesting idea. Though at Newark (the only station I've observed the new board for a significant amount of time), the sounds are audible, but not loud enough to alert passengers over the (quite loud) ambient noise.

Compare with the announcements, which are definitely audible.

Maybe you can write to the software designers. That's probably just a few lines of code to change the flip timing. Individual letters vs a name at a time is probably more complicated.

I was just looking carefully at the destinations on the old Solari board and the destinations changed as a single name, not individual letters.

Thanks. I got to see what only flashed by for a moment: CAPE COD as a destination.
