West Side IRT Closure

Posted by Nilet on Tue Aug 13 07:00:51 2019

So next two weekends, pretty much the entire Lenox/Broadway/7th Avenue IRT is straight-up closed— no 2 or 3 service in Manhattan, and no 1 south of 137th due to replacing the switches at 96th.

Except that if my understanding of the track layout is correct, they can still run 1 and/or 3 trains from South Ferry or Brooklyn to Times Square, as long as the trains run express in at least one direction. So why not? Did the switches get changed? Signal system doesn't allow it? Deemed too complicated? Just didn't want to bother and figured no one would gripe about this specifically?

Option 5; they’re using it as an opportunity to do other work on the line.

I hope that they use this model more often! Thank you Andy Byford!

Will be interesting to see the M run between Metropolitan Ave. and 145th/St. Nicholas. Don't think that route combo has ever been run before.

And is one I would consider in the future for a weekend (M) train after the (L) closure ends as that can give CPW local riders a 6th Avenue option as well.

As per 96 St Switches "during this suspension, we're also doing vital work along the entire 123 line" thus why there is no 1/2/3 service not just around 96th St.

Regarding the supplementary M service, the map in the above link is slightly deceptive because it appears that the M will terminate southbound at Delancey-Essex instead of presumably Middle Village.

This also makes me wonder how many people will either get on the M thinking it is going elsewhere or let it pass by not knowing where it is going. How about changing the letter/route of a train midway (eg. train would be labeled 'B' above 47-50th and 'M' below)? Or, how about designating the northbound service as 'B' and southbound as 'M'?

A person would have to be a bit too literal to think that. Sure there's probably going to be at least one person out there who's like that, but given the map guide is on top of where the M is, it's just a side effect

Why not just run the B...? Brighton could use the weekend service as well.

Easy enough once you've made it as far as 145th. :)

A now deceased t/o went from Bay Pky. to 205 St. one evening toward the end of the PM rush.

I suppose the trains running from the Bronx, down the Lex, and out to Brooklyn College this weekend will be labeled "2", even though except for their Bronx branch, they are exactly the same as a weekday "5".

From the rider's point of view, it just looks like a train got lost and may meander to any point in the system. If you grew up here you know the drill, but to anyone not using the subway year after year it's bewildering.
