Are the ongoing reroutes causing the switches to malfunction?

Posted by BrooklynTrain on Sat Jul 20 13:43:55 2019

Today, I've seen 3 problems due to reroutes:

(1) Northbound Q via R from DeKalb to Canal, causing switching problems at DeKalb (probably wouldn't have happened had the Q run via bridge and local riders been instructed to use IRT)
(2) Northbound N/R/D express from 36 to Atlantic, caused switching problems at 36th and an earlier suspension of 4th Ave service northbound (probably wouldn't have happened had the N been allowed to run express 59 to 36)
(3) R terminating at 9th Ave, causing northbound D via N due to 9th Ave switching problems (probably wouldn't have happened had the R been allowed to terminate at 59/4).

Is it a coincidence that 3 reroutes caused 3 switching problems today?

Also, many times there are evening switch problems at DeKalb due to so many trains stopping there (ridiculous how the D must stop there after 10:30pm weekdays southbound & often after 7pm weekdays northbound and cause large merging delays)

If they didn't abuse the signals so much by having so many trains do a weird route (like having the D stop at DeKalb and go 4th Ave local during weekday evenings in both directions), perhaps they'd have less maintenance work & more efficient service. Just a thought.

abuse the signals

Using the signals for a different route ought not to constitute abuse.

Overuse of switches? Nah.

Right. Normal operating procedure, for which the switches are designed.

If it gets to the point where we can't expect the switches and signals to operate reliably regardless of how they are used, we're in serious trouble.

If anything, hot weather could have encouraged malfunctions.

The problem is the heat expands the moveable parts of a switch and
moveable bridges. Heat can also cause sun kinks of rails deforming/warping the rails.

Correct. Back in older NYCTS days, many switches which were older than the current ones, got much more use than the switches are getting now even with service diversions and reroutes.
