[PHOTOS] R - 4 6

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Mon Jun 24 11:57:56 2019

Everyone's talking about R-46's, so what the hell !
Delivery by LIRR Bay Ridge Br, Parkville Jct and McDonald Ave to Coney Island.
I passed by on the (F) yesterday and it seems an apartment building is going up on or near Parkville Jct.
Is that a red Plymouth Valiant or Dodge Dart ? (April 23, 1975)

High speed testing on LIRR at Kew Gardens. (April 24, 1975)
image host

Fresh off the car float is #888 and others delivered at 50th St & 1st Ave. Brooklyn.
(December 30, 1977)
image host

I was riding the West End (B) line one day and saw the delivery of R-46's unfolding.
Luckily, I had my camera bag and lenses with me. (July 1978)

image host

Ready for their journey to Coney Island yard, up pops a put-in of R-32's on the (RR).
Stored on the lower level 9th Ave for the PM rush hour. (July 1978)

(F) Culver express switching to the local track at Kings Hwy. (July 1978)

R-46's with "Train to the Plane' on their blue band at Howard Beach. (Sept. 24, 1978)

Leaving Stillwell Terminal in Coney Island is #1270, brand new with short lived Rockwell HPT-2 trucks.
Now gone Astroland Astro Tower on your right. (October 1978)

Not a reroute, but a "dead head" move to Coney Island yard. Location is Avenue H on the Brighton Line. (July 1979)

At Ditmas Ave. on the (F) line. (July 1979)

A pair of General Overhauled R-46's enroute to CIY at Ft. Hamilton Pkwy on the (B) Line. (May 31, 1990)

Inside the Brooklyn Army Terminal are R-46's ready for shipment to M-K for General Overhaul,
while newly overhauled units await shipment to SBK yard. (July 31, 1990)

Only the original architect the late Squire Vickers, who designed the stations, would have known that answer. Oddly, the original large mosaic tablets at 190th Street and 181st Street, plus the small ones seen on the mezzanines from 175th Street to 207th Street, are said to be considered colored as "burgundy". None of those five stations that I mentioned, plus the 8th Avenue local stations from 163rd Street to 23rd Street, had the stripe tile bands as originally planned and designed.

On a related note, does the MTA/Transit Museum still have an example of the Rockwell truck? I remember them displaying one on the platform around the time the museum opened. In later years, after the problems with the trucks appeared, the description plaque was removed, but the truck remained, IIRC. It was removed when they revamped their displays years ago.

I believe they were banned from the Jamaica el because of close clearances past ENY.
Also a close clearance past Essex St off the Willy B. Here they are in ENY yard in April of 1981

Are those GE R16's in storage ? Notice the B and S route signs, though the latter may be from the Bankers RR service.

There seems to be an R27 in the background signed BB, and also a couple of R10 sets. I know they got put on the J fora few months. They must have blanked all the signs.

They could not run in regular service on the Eastern because their end and center excess would cause clearance problems with 2 trains of them passing on the curves entering and leaving the Willy B. One train at a time under strictly controlled circumstances was not a problem.

Yes, look at the roofs, not a spec of steel dust. Haven't turned a wheel for some time. GE R-16's in mothballs at Rockaway Park, Fresh Pond and Concourse yards to name a few.

Notice the B and S route signs, though the latter may be from the Bankers RR service.

Can't say for sure if those GE R-16's were on the (B) or not. Maybe the (S) was for a dead head move.

I don't know, lots of mysteries in that photo, like the appearance of R 10's. I heard those r-46's were there for some repair work of sorts at ENY shops.

Though the IND color chart shows Lexington Av (E,M) to be in the red family (like its neighbor Fifth Av), I believe Lex is the only completely non-tiled IND station at the platform level; its walls are painted, not tiled.

They look more likely to be the IRT R-12/14's instead, because they have eight vents per side on their ogee roof top exteriors, as I had counted them. The R-10's had seven of them however.

Yes.
It was because of this, the TA was tossing around the idea of using slightly narrower rail cars for the Eastern Division routes.
THIS evolved into the R143s type car with the tapered upper body of a little over 9ft.
The original idea was an Expanded IRT sized car of 65-67ft,simular to the original R62 design car.
However, both designs were dropped in favor of uniformity system wide.
R143 design proved to be so durable and eye catching, that there was no REAL need to make any major changes other than core technology(see R211).
BODY WISE,the design is sound.
To me,the R110B would have been the car for the immediate future if it were 65ft instead of 67ft.
