MTA has returned to double-letter designations

Posted by Joe V on Sat Jun 22 11:36:02 2019

At least on their Service Status page to distinguish among the gray S's.

They should make them X, P, H

SF, S SR, the second letter being a smaller font

They could do the same for the A: AL, AF, AR. At least when a disruption happens on one of the branches.

Only one train is worthy of the big "X".

Nope. I always found 3 gray S's annoying. They need to be visually distinguished. Sometimes, you'll see an R46 with a blue S ona RockPark Shuuttle, but that is supposedly intended for the overnight Lefferts Shuttle, yet they do not see 8th Avenue either, which is what blue means.

No, the Rockaway Shuttle was formerly blue. The Blue S is intended for that, although it’s now also gray.

Right> I say designate the Rockaway Shuttle as the H, the Times Square Shuttle as the 8- and the Franklin can remain the S. It would be much easier, especially for out-of-towners, to understand.

This is a solution in search of a problem?

The blue SIR bullet was always the exception because the SIR is separate from the subway system. Now I say bring back the NX, RJ and QT!

I don't think duplicative, actually triplicative, route designations in the same transit system should exist.

Excluding 'I' and 'O' there are 579 possible two-letter combinations.
