Steinway tubes emergency exit location?

Posted by gbs on Fri Jun 21 22:25:05 2019

I'm guessing that the Steinway tubes have an emergency exit staircase to the street somewhere at the Manhattan shoreline. Is anything visible from the street above? Many such exits consist of a yellow rectangle in the sidewalk with words embossed like "Do Not Block".

I'm taking a group sightseeing along 42 St starting at the East River and it would be interesting to show the exit to them. One of the first things we'll see is the ventilation tower for the Queens Midtown Tunnel, which at that point is next to the Steinway tubes.

Good luck finding it! ;-) It's visible...but not where you might be expecting.

I found it (I think), but it's not in the sidewalk, it's a regular double-door below a UN building along 42 St, just beyond the exit ramp overpass from the FDR Drive. The area is marked "No Parking" and the door label says MTA Steinway Tunnel.

When the UN complex was built in the late '40s, the original emergency exit must have been modified and incorporated into the UN design. Perhaps the original exit was in the sidewalk as I had expected.
