A cool OMNY feature

No authentication needed.

Yes, this means that a stolen iPhone can be used by the thief to pay for transit.

Good enough reason for a thief to snatch your Smartphone.

And that's all they will get, transit rides. I don't have to go Best Buy or B&H and buy another right away for $150 -$200. This flaw in the OMNY system will make Smartphones even more of a target.

What flaw? Are you referring to the ability to use the mobile payment without unlocking? This is an optional feature that I discovered by accident while on my couch and HAS TO BE ENABLED. If you’re too paranoid to use it, don't.

Also: $200? LOL!

Also, I usually have my phone in my hand frequently while in the subway, so this adds even more convenience. Since I wasn't alive in the 1970s, I'm not stuck in them.

It is not a matter of being stuck in the 1970's but reducing risk exposure and expenses.

Yes $200, and that is for cheap ones. If you want to spend your time and money making emergency trips to the store, go right ahead.

My phone is clipped onto my belt and the OMNY card will have a $5 replacement fee, will be on string reel from my belt in a clear hard plastic case, with hands free, and will be registered against other losses when reported stolen.

1. The added risk is sufficiently low.
2. I have no interest in using a $200 smartphone (nor a $1000 one). What time and money? I've never had my phone stolen, never knew anyone who had a phone stolen from their hands and find it unlikely that it will ever happen. I find it significantly more likely that I'll "lose" my phone by accidental damage.
3. I'm not going to stare at a wall while riding a train.

What do you think Smartphones cost ? We don't all get them for $15 with 2 year contracts.

I want my hands free and can use my brain without obsessing with a phone, nor blowing away $$$ on unlimited data plans.

Proves my point further. I am not whipping out such a device.

I can read, think, or watch people, which is what all humans did for decades before the Millenials came along. I do not need the constant stimulus of the internet, need to text, or go through my e-mails.

"I have no interest in using a $200 smartphone (nor a $1000 one)."

Talk to someone under 50. I'm no gadget-collector and don't buy the latest model phone, but I even I, who watches 0 videos, plays 0 games and shoots 0 vids with my phone find that an unsubsidized (retail, unlocked) device can't hack it. It's possible pay "$200" for a decent phone, but only if there's a contract or carrier lock-in.

I use an older model of a premium brand. It would not even be considered by the 20-something set but it's well above the throwaway / no-name level, it's the minimum I find to be useable. Of course I'm using it mostly to run apps, often to waste time/surf the web, occasionally for txts and on rare occasions to for a non-spam phone call. The thing we call a phone is now rarely used for talk.

I am under 50. Maybe you mean under 30.

I used to get a contract phone about once every two years for $200. But then they stopped doing that. I would have still been using an iPhone 6S from 2015, but my father needed a new phone so I decided to pay full price for an iPhone 8 and gave him the 6S. I seriously considered getting another 6S or a 7 for less money but decided not to. IMO, they're really hitting diminishing returns in the smartphone innovation market and the new features they release are no longer compelling. But then, I don't need "Animoji." Dual SIM would be nice for foreign travel.

The term "phone" to refer to these devices is an interesting artifact. Perhaps someday kids will wonder why they're called phones at all.

I have an MVNO as a phone provider and buy my own phones.

My LG K7 works just fine. I also have a K8, which is not connected to a provider, has double the hard drive, a better camera, and I load more apps onto it. They each cost about $120 and works just fine. My monthly phone bill is $11.17 a month.

Generation Debt would not be satisfied with that.

That's a pretty good strategy. I also switched to an MVNO, but it's still over $25/month + taxes for voice and data, I can't do entirely without mobile data. Which carrier are you using for $11/month? Sounds like no mobile data for that price.

It sounds like you did some inquisitive shopping to find those phones, the well known, heavily advertised current Samsung/Apple/Lenovo items cost more. My strategy has been "keep what you have", so my primary phone is 4 years and 5 generations old and I figure on getting 2 more years out of it.

Phones can be more easily stolen but are more worthless on the aftermarket. A car can be more readily stripped for parts. A phone has to be sent to China to reprogram its serial number to allow it to be activated by someone else.

Ting.com
The are based in a western Toronto suburb, but can only do business in the US. They run off T-Mobile for GSM and Sprint for CDMA. (CDMA is dead in Canada).

LG's work good on T-Mobile's network. Motorola suck. Had two of them and returned them. They do not pick up Band 12.

$6 for the service
$3 for up to 100 minutes
I shut Data off. Wifi in a restaurant is good enough for me when out. NJT stations have Optimum Wifi. Some of it leaks up to a waiting train at Newark, I blocked any Spam texts that come through or that would be another $3 a month.

Actually, it's $10.62 a month

It has double the hard drive capacity and a better camera. It's 2 years newer. But it does not pick up phone signals as well as the older one, though I don't use it as a phone. Two of these is still cheaper than one IPhone, and I am not restricted to one manufacturer. I don't use 80% of the Apps. I don't do Facebook or Twitter.

OK, sounds like you also have a landline. I use my pocket computer with attached phone for more functions and don't have a landline, so I'd have to up the plan. But no landline means landline install and bill. I will look into Ting - my MVNO runs on T-Mo and AT&T, customer service is all US based and you don't need 4 levels of menu to speak to an agent. I don't mind paying a little more when the payee is an American (am Deplorable like that ;-).

Sounds like you found a good deal and I will check out Ting, if they use Sprint's CDMA towers it's an advantage in NYC. Sprint's freqs include 700-800 MHz bands which get into buildings, T-mo seems to be weaker indoors. When I have spare time I'll see about a Verizon MVNO, VZ has great coverage in NYC but is inflexible and has high prices for their house-branded service.

Generation Debt would not be satisfied with that.

The debt isn't from paying full price for cellphone service. It's from student loan debt in most cases which either drives younger people onto cheap unlimited MVNO plans or onto their parents plans. At best, they're on T-Mobile or Sprint if they're with post-paid carriers.

Having a phone stolen while riding a train is incredibly common.

Most common pattern: you're sitting on the train looking at your phone. You have a bag on your lap. Maybe you're with friends who are all looking at their phones too. Just before train doors close, the thief grabs your phone and sprint out the doors. If you're not trapped in the train by closing doors, they outrun you up the steps to the street where they take off into the wild.

I've seen the above happen at least a dozen times in the past decade. Occasionally especially if police are patroling a station exit they are likely to see the thief high-tailing it and grab them at the faregates. Nearly all phone thieves commit fare evasion - but not necessarily the other way around.

Now, anecdotally, the incidence of phone thefts does seem to be down from a couple years ago. A couple years ago, iPhones were all the rage and most other models had little street value after being stolen. I think privacy firmware in the Apple phones has reduced the street value of stolen iphones as compared to a couple years ago.

I have a landline phone in every room.

If you go to Canada, your CDMA-only phone will be totally useless as a phone. On July 1, 2015, CDMA was shut down. I found that out the hard way 2 weeks later when I went to Montreal. Good thing Canad still has coin telephones on every street corner. I have a virtual calling card "just in case".

I am 68 and I can read a phone as well as I can read printed material. This was true both before and after I had cataract operations. And of course my distance vision and my reading vision are quite different, and I need corrective lenses to deal with both.

I prefer printed material or a large computer screen to a phone, because I like to be able to see more text at any given time than a phone allows. But that's just a preference, not a limitation of my eyes.
