Tuscarora Almanac – June 12, 1949 – The Book of Last Runs Brooklyn, New York New York City Board of Transportation BMT Division This the last day of operation for the Metropolitan Avenue trolley line (Rt.33) Cars had operated out of the Fresh Pond Depot since 1941. Watson Tuscarora Almanac - June 12, 2009 - The Book of Last Runs Far Rockaway, Queens, New York New York City Transit Authority IND Division This will be the last day of revenue service for the slant-ended R-40's. The final run left Far Rockaway as an "A" train at 7:52 PM and arrived at 207 Street at 9:30 PM. The consist was (n) 4425-4, 4415-4, 4398-9, 4257-6 and 4433-2 (s). They were part of a group of 400 cars built by the Saint Louis Car Division of General Street Industries in 1968-69. As completed the order consisted of 200 cars with slant ends and no air-conditioning, 100 cars with slant ends and air-conditioning and 100 cars with straight (or modified) ends and air conditioning . This last group of cars is usually referred to as the R-40 M's and they will continue in service until August 28, 2009. I thought the R40M's were better hands down than any R42. They operated so much smoother.But what did the guys like me, the motorman know? Car equipment knew better than me of the structural integrity of the cars, which likely influenced their decision. |
