Tuscarora Almanac - June 11, 1940 - The Book of Last Runs

Service is discontinued on the 9th Avenue El between 155th Street and South Ferry. The following stations are closed: 151st Street, 145th Street, 140th Street, 135th Street, 130th Street, 125th Street, 116th Street, 110th Street, 104th Street, 99th Street, 93rd Street, 86th Street, 81st Street, 72nd Street, 66th Street, 59th Street, 50th Street, 42nd Street, 34th Street, 30th Street, 23rd Street, 14th Street, Christopher Street, Houston Street, Desbrosses Street, Franklin Street, Warren Street, Barclay Street, Cortlandt Street, Rector Street, Battery Place and South Ferry.

Effective June 12, 1940 two new free transfer points were established. At 155th Street between the remaining section of the Ninth Avenue El and the IND Concourse Line. The second was at
161st Street-River Avenue between the IRT Jerome Avenue Line and the IND Concourse Line. Paper transfers were used at both locations. The transfer point at 155th Street lasted until August 31, 1958 when the remaining section of the Ninth Avenue El was discontinued. The use of paper transfers at 161st Street was discontinued on August 17, 1961 when new escalators were placed in service.



Service is discontinued on the 2nd Avenue Elevated Line between 57th Street and 129th Street Stations.

The following stations are closed; 65th Street, 72nd Street, 80th Street, 86th Street, 92nd Street, 99th Street, 105th Street, 111th Street, 117th Street, 121st Street, 125th Street and 129th Street. (Note: The closure at 129th Street refers only to the 2nd Avenue Line platform. The station will continue to be served by the 3rd Avenue El.)

The station at South Ferry will continue to be served by the 2nd and 3rd Avenue Els.
The station at 155th will remain in service and become the southern terminus of a shuttle service between there and Burnside Avenue.

Uncle Larry went on his trip today told me it was okay to comment about the 9th Ave el, so here goes:

After the PM rush hour on June 10th, 1940, 5 three-car sets of Composite cars were sent down the 3rd Ave el, around South Ferry, and up 9th Ave to the center track of Jerome Ave line for temporary storage. They would become the Polo Grounds shuttle from Burnside Ave to 155th St. Service on the 9th Ave el, between 155th St and South Ferry, officially ended at 12:01AM, Tuesday, June 11th 1940. I'll leave the details of the last train to Larry, when he returns. This marked the single largest abandonment of any elevated line in NYC. According to an old MTA info posting, the distance was 10.24 miles. The death warrant for the 9th Ave el had been issued by the NYC Board of Adjustment on June 3rd, when it okayed the sum of $6,500,000 for its purchase. Ironically, that sum would be almost half of what the City paid for the 6th Ave el ($12,500,000) in 1938. But, the 9th Ave el had seen better days.

The 1927 opening of the Holland Tunnel led to a decline in ridership on the west side ferries. The Desbrosses St Ferry served by the el's express stop (same name) closed in 1930. The opening of Penn Station led to less usage of the 30th St Station. Besides the Depression, the el's misfortunes were further complicated by the opening of the IND 8th Ave subway on Sept 10th, 1932. This was 15 days after the IRT officially went bankrupt- mainly due to the five cent fare and fewer elevated riders. The final 2 blows were the 1937 opening of the Lincoln Tunnel and the 1938 closing of the 6th Ave el.

Despite these misfortunes, there was an effort to keep the 2nd and 9th Ave els open. On June 8th, an organization called the Bronx Civic Association went to court to get a last minute stay of execution, scheduled for June 11th. But, the court ruled that the sale to the City could still proceed. Rumor had it that any injunction requests against the new owner- the City Board of Transportation, to keep service running would be scheduled to be heard on Friday, June 28th. No hearing on that date ever took place.

The Iselin, New Jersey station on the Penn Central Northeast Corridor Line is closed. It had become redundant when Metropark station opened several months earlier.

An “F” train of R-38’s hit one of the bumping block east of 179th Street Station. The consist was (n) 3991-90, 4041-40, 3983-82, 4069-68 and 4129-28. 3990 and 3991 were heavily damaged.

I remember seeing NJT NEC timetables as late as the 1980s showing "Metropark (Iselin)". I still think of that station name, including the parentheses, that way to this day!

This accident was repeated several years later with a train of R46 cars and a similar outcome.
