The W can be extended to Bay Ridge to augment 8-car R train to/from Nassau.

That worked fine in the period 9/12 - 10/26 2001. The M was running down the Sea Beach.

Have 4th AVe local loadings risen much since then ?

The part of the m that's packed is the ridewood, Bushwick, Williamsburg sections that can't have the 10 car trains anyway. But one of the reasons they are packed is because of where the M now goes on 6th Ave....

Interesting. I'm not seeing the M as being that crowded in the PM as it leaves 14th. But I suspect a lot of people transfer from the 6. I think the completion of the connection to the northbound 6 has made a big difference.

That would make sense, as pre M-V merge those same people would have transferred from the 6 at Canal St.

Outside of a shorter headway, not much since Met is tho only station I’m aware of that could never hold a full 8 steels, but only 7 about the same length as an 8 car train of 60 footers.

I had actually mentioned in several posts on this topic, that it would probably have made sense to run a Jamaica service like a resurrected K up 6 Av to Ctl since with a shorter deadhead time between Jamaica and Ctl, work programs would be easier since an extra half trip could be added to the runs increasing productivity.

Or used the L. I've definitely seen uptown 6 traffic coming into 14th Street increase in the AM rush hour since the connection at Bway-Lafayette was put in.

Rebuild the Metro Ave station, stick whatever in on the south end of the platform on pillars above, move the switches, run 9 car R160's and R179's there and on the L.

Run a few extra M's in and out of ENY, just as a few E's run to and from 179th, and a few N's and R's run to 96th/2nd.

Actually, the connection was built for the 2nd ave subway connection to the Jamaica line, and Not 6th ave.
When the plans were cancelled, the line was thru routed to Houston st.

The Nassau/Chrystie st reverse tunnel is partially built, and provisions are there for the Jamaica/2nd ave connection.

Expect neither of these lines to actually be completed.

I think a Jamaica Center/Jamaica Center (starts on one level, ends on the other) route would be cool from a railfan perspective. I'm not even going to attempt any operational justification for it- just saying that it would be a remarkable thing. Anyone know of such a thing ever running for a GO?

Yeah, but it wouldn't make much difference when it counts.
They ran 480 trains down there for years until the 80s..

My fantasy is to connect the two levels at Jamaica Center.

Then you can have Queens Blvd be 3 tracks inbound and one track outbound in the AM rush.

How do you get all those trains back to Queens, you ask? Via the other route to Jamaica Center, of course.

Not a bad idea, but of you are going to extend the platform and realign the tracks then extend the platforms to 600ft to allow for possible future expansion.

Back when I was in the schedule office and the Archer Av subway was still under construction I submitted a suggestion to do just that. While I received a formal commendation for it, It was not done because by the time I made the suggestion, construction was too far advanced to allow for such a connection to be built. Another example of the cesspool of incompetence that passes for TA planning. It’s the same lack of planning expertise that resulted in connecting only the express tks of the BMT Bway Subway to 63 St and the SAS even though the subway infrastructure was designed for it.

Don't understand how that worked. For the 4 days that the Con Ed 14th Street plant was out, there was no subway service south of 34th street, so I don't see how the M could have gotten from the WB to midtown.

Once power was back on, some of the river tunnels (like the L) remained closed a while longer, but the M and the E use the same river tunnel, so the E should have been back in full service the same time as the M.

I'm guessing maybe the Rutgers tube didn't open for a while, so the M replaced the E in Queens and the E replaced the F to 179th.

Hey,I don't know how it went or came about.
All I do know is the fact the M was the Only service there, with the J on the lower level.
The LIRR was totally free,too...so a bit of railfanning was a must.
