Photo/Video: LIRR Weekend Central Branch Shuttle

Posted by Q23 on Fri Jun 7 23:12:04 2019

During the weekend of June 1/2, there was no service between Mineola and Hicksville due to the Cherry Lane Bridge Replacement. I got a chance to ride the shuttle both ways, which made a stop at Bethpage. Two sets were used at a time, with both of them passing each other at Bethpage. Enjoy!

Why isn't there any third rail along this branch?
It would certainly be a excellent way to divert traffic around any blockages, and provide MUEs with another eastbound outlet.

There has been serious discussion at the MTA about electrifying the Central Branch, and it makes good sense.

Do they have room for that at either end without taking property?

The Babylon end has some industrial businesses in the way. There might be room to move some of them around in the same general vicinity.

The Farmingdale end would require taking a lot of houses. Unlikely.

It might actually be possible at Hicksville (to connect Port Jeff), due to being elevated over the station parking lot.

The angle between the two branches in Hicksville is somewhat larger as well, which would make a wye easier to construct. It would be nice if a Port Jefferson train could be rerouted via Babylon, especially if electrification is extended past Huntington (and on the Central Branch). It would be a much longer route, but at least it would be an alternative. I really didn't think a wye in Bethpage or Babylon was practical on account of the tight angle.

Yes, there have been some modest discussions about expanding electrification... We can probably expect Central Branch electrification and a "study" for the Port Jefferson Branch in the 2020-2024 Capital Program and that's it.

There's not really enough room for wye tracks on either end without taking property and/or having a very tight/slow curve.

Central Branch detours add a ton of time...at least an hour or so, so it's not like it would be all that useful outside extraordinary disruptions.

I'd rather electrify to Port Jeff which has daily usage.

Central Branch has no stations and useful only during emergencies. If there is a blockage on the south shore, there is no point in rerouting them via the Main Line - all intermediate stations would be skipped.

You would need a trolley car type of curve, not something 85' rail cars could do. Hicksville and West Babylon are not Spuyten Duyvil.

All reasons for no wye leads me to think a new north/south line, electrified, should be constructed of the type the "Air Train" uses.
One that would employ a wide enough arc to allow a moderate rate of speed.
A single track, running along or next to the Sagtikos PKWY.

Combining this with the main line 3rd track, they could run a new service (gasp!) - a main line local to Babylon. This way the three peak Montauk branch trains that make those stops won't have to, not to mention the easier intra-island travel.

They could run a main line local with diesels. No need to electrify.

The South Shore diesel that do stop in Mineola do it for a reason: there are people from east of Babylon headed to Mineola. "main line local to Babylon" would be of no use to them.

The existing customers would transfer at Babylon (it's mainly Chaminade HS anyway). More customers would be served with better frequencies.

I don't think they have any desire to start yet another diesel service when they have a perpetual equipment shortage on that front.

They are not going to start a new MU service from Babylon onto the main line either. No excess operating money and little market to justify it.

It's ridiculous how many substations the LIRR requires for electrification. 4 substations between Rosedale and Bellmore when Amtrak has just as many between New Haven and Boston.

Another thing I read about the LIRR's electric system though is how it apparently operates on a grid throughout the whole island west of around Ronkonkoma, making it relatively easy to electrify to Oyster Bay, Patchogue, and Port Jefferson. Not sure how true that is though.

DC is different than AC

They could extend the 3rd rail to Albertson without any more substations. LIRR isn't interested.

Understandably so. In the case of OB, it isn't worth electrifying if it isn't going the full length of the line.

Albertson does not have heavy ridership, probably because it is the first stop in Zone 7, and the 1 MU is one stop down the line. At one time, there was not much difference between Zone 4 and Zone 5 fares.

There's no market because the service sucks.

In any case, there alreads is a market by replacing the local service along that line. Babylon is just a convenient turning location with a yard. The Port Jeff and Ronkonkoma trains can all express after Hicksville allowing this to handle the local customers. Such a new route would make use of the newly added Grand Central capacity.

Consider this... the Babylon branch is the preferred routing for diesel service because the Main Line / Central routing is often slow and crowded. When the 3rd track is completed and if the Central ever gets juice, it will improve the service significantly. Some of the Babylon MU expresses that stop at Freeport only could be sent up the main line to Mineola and Hicksville. I think there is a market for that service but perhaps not an enormous one.

The Central Branch would still be single track. If run hourly, the Huntington trains could go express Hicksville - Jamaica, have these Babylon trains be all stop. Half hourly Huntington service on weekends could go to hourly, and Port Jeff Shuttles should be hourly as well.

The Babylon expresses could stop at Amityville - Lindenhurst, not at Freeport, then get rid of half of the half hourly locals east of Massapequa Park. That could save a train set. It is still a costly add to operations.
