UP crossing on a wooden trestle

Posted by Dave on Mon Jun 10 14:44:44 2019

Just up the road a piece from my house. Three Uncle Pete units on the point and three more pushing on the rear hauling a heavy unit train of frack sand, on beautiful June day. Lead unit was C45ACCTE (ES44AC) 5485, followed by SD70ACe 8646 and SD70ACe 8791. DPU power was SD70AH 9078, SD70M 4095, and AC4400CW 5665:

That's some low clearance; the speed limit sign appears to be higher than the bridge.

That's a rather...modest way of eliminating a grade crossing.

Unseen just south of there is a river-crossing bridge. The location of the picture is in a city park which sits in a bowl, if you will. The elevation both north and south of the park is higher, so the entire ROW in the park is elevated to match the ROW north and south of the park and the bridge approach.

Here's a couple of pictures from March 2014 showing what I mean:

Excellent pictures.

The structure reminds me of what President Lincoln said when he saw a bridge erected by Union General Herman Haupt and his engineers during the war:

"That man Haupt has built a bridge four hundred feet long and one hundred feet high, across Potomac Creek, on which loaded trains are passing every hour, and upon my word, gentlemen, there is nothing in it but cornstalks and beanpoles."

The bridge in your photos doesn't look like it can support that huge train, but like the old general's masterpiece, there it is.

Thanks! I like your reference to Lincoln's comment; very appropriate here!

Awesome pictures, thanks for sharing.

Andrew, great pick-up on the speed limit sign. I tell you this much, while the trestle looks strong and sturdy from the pictures, I wouldn't go under it with a train passing overhead with that low clearance :).

I commend UP for planning ahead for sea level rises. This location ought to be good through 2080 or so.

Thanks! I've been underneath when a train goes by, to take pictures. Some dirt comes down but the trestle is rock solid. Those are very thick timbers.

That line is the Ft. Worth & Western's Ft. Worth sub. Back in the day it was Sante Fe trackage. UP and KCS have running rights on the sub to serve a frack sand plant.

Thanks for all the pictures!

What was there before the park? For some reason, I just find it odd that the railroad wouldn't do something bigger, like leveling the land, but the way you describe it, I guess it makes sense.

The park is 100+ years old. I don't know when the track was laid and the bridge built spanning the river.

Maybe something like that would work in Eisenhower Park for the LIRR Central Branch instead of an expensive cut or tunnel. It looks rustic enough there.

Does anyone know the rule if a golfer hits a ball into a passing freight train?

No penalty and the ball is played from where it comes to rest.
