The only people who lost out on the deal were the 4th ave local riders... now that we're flush with cars for the first time in ages, they should extend the W to 9th Ave during the rush hour.

They built that Essex street connection for the KK. It lasted about 6 or 7 years, then they said fuck it, and that was that for 35 years.

I suppose the Nassau Street connection will be back in 25 years or so.

That is false. The V lasted from December 17, 2001 until June ?, 2010, a period of about 8 years and 6 months. The Orange M has now been running for just over 8 years and 11 months. It doesn’t need to reach its ninth anniversary because the V never did.

Not on any M I've used.
The M is one of those routes that has a rush hour service in both directions.
6th ave Uptown towards Queens..and 6th Ave Downtown towards Queens.
Overall, the New M is better than the old.
However, there is still a need for Eastern/Southern Division connectivity.
Canal st is STILL Horrendously dangerous due to Lack of through service.
Not to mention the current issues with the R along 4th ave.

I didn't want to mention it,but there is scuttlebutt in the transit wind, concerning the lack of storage/yard space and the R179.

I overheard a few TA suits talking about this, and one said "the issue is being worked out. We're talking about running J trains south to BayRidge, taking care of 2 problems at once."

Two problems?
Storage and reliability?
Additional service along 4th ave via J,and additional storage space for J/Z cars?

Makes sense BASED on need.

Does the Brooklyn portion of the M get packed sometimes?

My personal experience with the M is almost all between 14th and 47th-50th. In the PM, it tends to be quite full there but not packed, with a major emptying out for the L at 14th.

I agree. The Orange M certainly seems to be one of the best routings they ever came up with, even if it was sadly born out of a service cut. At least it was a silver lining.

At the same time, I also agree that there should at east be rush hour service between 4th Avenue and the Nassau Street line. In the final years of the Brown M, I definitely saw ridership between Broad Street and Brooklyn, but almost no through riders between Court Street and Marcy Avenue, so my thought would be to revive the Brown R to Chambers Street, but this time, give it its own letter- maybe P or Y or X. However, if turning/storing J trains is becoming problematic, then maybe what we really need is what you heard about- basically a reincarnation of the RJ.

Could Whitehall St handle a relaying of both R & W trains ? I think not.

The northbound J/Z may not be so reliable if they all had to come from Bay Ridge.

They had one think right in 1967, which is one of the things they ironically got rid of, and maybe do again - starting the 5 RJ's out of Jamaica somewhere in the 530- 630am period between the last overnight JJ and first daytime QJ, which become peak direction trains from Bay Ridge, dropping out at either Eastern Pkwy or 168th Jamaica.

The R’s services woes aren’t limited to just rush hours. They happen around the clock. That’s why I think if the J or another service from Nassau St is going to be extended to Bay Ridge, it’s going to have to run more than just during rush hours.

Maybe make the “Brown R” the primary 4th Ave local. In fact, I’ll even suggest pulling an “Orange M” here and call THIS service the R and call the Forest Hills-Whitehall route P or a different letter.

Of course, Whitehall can’t turn both the R (or P in this case) and W. So I’m going to suggest extending the W to Bay Ridge as the secondary 4th Ave local (with the rerouted R to Essex or Chambers as the primary). I’m also going to suggest installing two switches south of 86th St/4th Ave so that W trains can use the middle track between 86th and 95th to relay. That should address any issues with 95th Street turning two services.

2 Sundays again, I arrive Dekalb southbound on a Q. We were 2 minutes early and sat for that time. An R was across the platform with doors open as we got there, and as we left. I doubt it was early. The dispatchers were fucking around. They already have all 3 4th Avenue trains cut back to 12 minute intervals.

The RJ was suppose to be the original through service, pretty much replacing the RR outright.
The QT would have remained as the Broadway Local to Astoria.

What made them change the plan was a mystery.
However, Today we are looking for a way to bring additional service to 4th ave riders, bring back a safer option for Canal st transfers, and solve the train storage issues.
Having the J line operate out of 95th st 4th ave will in fact kill two out of three problems that wreck 4th ave local service.
Some overnight J trains could stored at either Coney Island or 38th street yards.

Yet they wasted no time in getting ride of the RJ (sort of), making it a Banker's RR Special of 5 trains, theoretically to Chambers, in reality to Metro Av or ENY. Then they extended the QJ from Brighton Branch to Coney Island making its long run even longer.

They have storage issues because they really should have scrapped the R42's by now. 3 trains are in ENY with 1 that gets out every day, the rest are in storage in Pitkin. Only half the R32's are out everyday for the A&C. They should send an R32 set to the J train.

They expected Bay Ridge and SI people headed to Wall Street to take the Ferry or transfer to the IRT at Atlantic Av, not re-congest the BMT Canal St complex. TA did not understand customer decisions.

They may or may not need additional 4th AVe locals based on loads. Dispatching incompetence needs to be addressed.

Initially, the RR bankers specials (which the road staff continued to call RJs) all laid up to Chambers St. This was done at the same time the QJs were extended to Stl and the off hour JJ designation was eliminated. When The M started running along the Brighton Line replacing the QJ, traffic checks revealed that additional service was needed out of Met, so the first RR Nassau was sent to Met to make service. In the PM an early M layup was operated as the last RR Nassau special. Similar line swapping was done between the QBs and the RRs when the RR was the only service out of Astoria. The firs 2 QBs operated through to Astoria and returning S/B, one all the way to 95 St and the other laying up at Canal St. In the PM the first 2 RR layups at Astoria one of which was the one that laid up at Canal in the AM turned S/B to make the last 2 QBs.

As I have said before, I would do it as either a "Brown (K)" or making the (Z) its own line and have it run 95th Street-Essex at all times with scheduled in service yard runs to and from Broadway Junction that are noted as such in the schedule. This also would eliminate the need for the late-night (R) to Whitehall as anyone looking for Whitehall specifically can take the K/Z to anywhere from 59th Street to Court and anywhere take the (N) from there to Whitehall.
