Tuscarora Train of the Week No. 14 The QB and QT

Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Wed May 15 05:20:31 2019

Tuscarora Train of the Week No. 14

Rt. 1 or “QT” Broadway-Brighton Local via Tunnel
Rt. 1 or “QB” Broadway-Brighton Local via Bridge

Operator: New York City Transit Authority – BMT Division

Both the “QT” and the “QB” ran between Ditmars Boulevard and Coney Island. The former ran through the Montague Street Tunnel while the latter ran over the Manhattan Bridge (north side). In this essay we will look at their operations in the fall of 1962.

The “QT” ran Monday through Friday leaving Astoria from 6:25 AM to 7:18 PM and leaving Coney Island from 5:52 AM to 7 PM. Five trains leaving Coney Island between 7:30 and 8:24 AM terminated at Queensboro Plaza. Four southbound put-ins left from Queensboro Plaza between 4 and 5 PM.One AM train from Astoria terminated at Whitehall Street and there was one northbound put-in at Canal Street in the PM rush.

The “QT” ran with six car trains of R-27’s midday and eight car trains during the rush hours. Trains carried Red-Red markers light to Astoria and White-White markers to Coney Island.

The “QB” ran on weekdays from 7 PM to 6 AM and at all times on the weekend. The marker lights were the same as the “QT”.

The “QB” ran with eight R-27s on Saturdays and four on Sundays. At all other times it ran with six cars.

Please note that the “R-27” includes the R-27, R-30 and R-30A car classes.

I remember the afternoon at Coney Island watching them add two cars to the QT’s as they arrived.

When the R-27s first arrived, the QT ran to Ctl during the hours when the BMT went there.

I hate to contradict the formidable Messrs. Lonto and Linder, but the QB had the same markers as the Brighton Express, red and green.

Red and green were the markers for Brighton via Bridge, Local or express. Locals via tunnel were red-red or white-white, depending on destination.

The Q and QT ran together while the QB was all by its lonesome.

The Brighton Locals ran to Forest Hills since the opening of the 60th Street Tunnel Connection using B-types until the R27s came in.

Also I remember that the Q ran local in Brooklyn midday up until Chrystie. During the Newkirk construction I don't remember what they did.

And yes, the QB was red/qreen while the QT was Red/Red.

I never knew about the short turns at Whitehall or Canal as I mostly watched from Brooklyn. I was only 7 in 1962 after all.

There was skip stop service on the Brighton Line during the Newkirk Ave. station lengthening.

Pre Chrystie, the QBs DID carry the same markers as the QT red/red N/B and white/white S/B. It was only post Chrystie that the QBs started displaying the red/green markers of the former Brighton Exp. I was a Tw/M both before and after the change so I had to know the proper markers.

Another oddity is that pre Chrystie, the Jamaica Line used green/green markers in both directions whether the train was local or express.

At Newkirk, the local tracks were hard railed to the express side of each platform and the express tracks themselves were severed.

I think this depends on when you became a M/M. I lived in Flatbush until 1965. When I was younger, say into the early '60s, I used to park my bike next to the right-of-way on the Ex-Lax Mansion property. While the express ran (green-red) the Standards went by city-bound with red-red markers. Sometime about 8:30 the last Triplex came through on the express with red-green markers. Only a couple minutes later the first Standard via Local via Bridge came through with RED-GREEN markers.

That's when I knew to ride the newsstand as the News and the Mirror were in.

BTW, remember that the locals ran express on Broadway (stopping at 49th Street ) until midnight-ish, the so-called theater specials. Same as the Q now, before it went to 96th Street.

There was a time when the PM Brighton lcls (via Bridge) ran exp in Manhattan but by the time I started as a C/R in 1966, they ran lcl and carried W/W markers S/B.

Sending the Q local midday caused the use of an extra train set, as back-and-forth that would have cost 10-15 extra minutes to make local stops. Add that together with them not having ordered "B" in the bulkhead roll and "B/6th Av Exp" in the side sign rolls for the R32s and R38s and you have prime examples of the stupidest management of the TA era.
