Oh what might have been. They used the Stewart Line and tracks further east to deliver material for the building of Levittown. Should have made it into a regular branch all the way to Levittown(and possibly beyond)

I always wondered why the City waited almost a year after Unification
to begin this service. Did it really take a year to shave back the old NYW&B platforms, install subway type third rail, and put subway type contact shoes on those gate cars?

Initially, the Dyre Avenue Line was administered under the IND Division, thus making it the only route within that division to not only have narrow width cars but also wooden and open-gate el cars.

Re: May 15, 1985 N train derailment.

3766 never returned to service. 3767 eventually mated to 3650. Both cars survive today.

I was wondering how many mismated R-32s were still out there.

They also had to install signals. Nowadays, an identical project would probably take far more than 1 year.

I don’t think the platforms had to be shaved, but rather extended to meet the narrower IRT cars. From most documentation I have seen, the signals and 3rd rail came from a BMT el, probably Fulton that had been closed at the time of unification.

I was the Motorman Instructor assigned to DeKalb Avenue that morning. It was a real mess. That switch had just been replaced on an overnight General Order. A test train was run over the switch without incident. I forget the interval, but a number of trains transitioned the switch without incident. Not sure but could have been a thin flange. All I know it crated tons of paperwork.
