7 Line ATO Yes or No?

Posted by Lou from Brooklyn on Tue May 14 07:36:22 2019

Did the TA stop ATO on the 7 for trains overshooting the stop marker?
I saw something on NY1 but haven't followed up.
Well at least they can't blame the T/O.

"failure to monitor/supervise" "you didn't have your train under control"

I wouldn't immediately assume the T/Os were absolved. But who knows.

Who knows is right.

Knowing the culture they probably still blamed the motorman by telling him (her) "Once you noticed the train might not stop at the 11 car marker, why didn't you immediately take over operation".

That was my first thought.
I have to assume that the motorman was given some kind of instruction in this regard. Otherwise why are they in the cab ?

From what I'm being told, the train wasn't overshooting but would be skipping the stop entirely. So it may be that the TO did notice, but a lot of things could have happened.

Just figured out how easy it would be for a T/O to get away with skipping a stop once he realizes he's going to overshoot:

1. Two toots on the horn
2. PA (or intercom): Hey partner we gotta skip
3. Spin a tale about police activity over the PA

No one will give enough of a crap to actually try and verify that claim, they just want a reason even if it's bullshit.

Emergency braking in case there is debris on the roadbed or if someone jumps in front of a train as it's entering a station.

Therefore, why did a train stop with 4 cars out of a station if it was actually skipping it?

All you need is one 'I wanna speak to the manager' type, the passengers on the platform would be tweeting before you even got on the PA. The last thing you want to get hit with is Malfeasance, or what ever its called on the Subway side.

Regular riders have developed an instinct to know that two short horn blasts means the train is skipping. You can see their hopeful faces turn to disappointment long before the train reaches the end of the platform and continues.

Not saying it's impossible, but unless someone famous tweets about it, their complaints will get lost in the shuffle of hundreds of legitimate train bypass situation complaints.

Back in 1997, in a PM rush, I was on a Bronx-bound 1 or 9 that skipped every stop between 145th and Dyckman (there was some crazy situation that day). People on the platforms gave us far more than disappointed looks- many of them flipped us off as we went by, horn tooting.
