Posted by Bill Newkirk on Thu Apr 18 12:21:11 2019 The other side of the bridge Whoa ! Talk about tight headways ! The 3rd Ave local tracks were reputedly not signaled, express tracks were. That circular object on the right is a cluster light fixture that shown light on the back end of the train in the station. I see a two door Mercury there. What's that station wagon in front of it, Dodge or Plymouth ? Also, can anyone ID this station ? Who needs a railfan window when you have an open storm door. I'll bet no one fell out of the back. Today they would drop their cell phone on the track. This must have been shortly after the Manhattan section was closed. I see the express track was platformed over. Your comments and corrections are most welcome. I'm signing off now, my eyebrows are killing me !!! |

I didn’t really pay attention, but some sources have mentioned that the MUDCs were removed from service first and the Qs provided service until replaced by the Steinways. I do know that by the summer of 1958 all service was provided by the Steinways since after my father died in July of that year my mother and I had to go to a Social Security office on Tremont Av near 3rd and we took the el to get there and the equipment used was steel IRT cars (at that time I didn’t know the names of the various types of subway equipment). |

Morning southbound 3rd Ave Thru-Express trains switched from the center express track to the local track, just north of 149th St. After stopping at the lower level of 143rd St, they used a former non-revenue ramp track to get to the upper level and continue south, like before. PM express trains did the reverse. The trackage from the upper level of 143rd St, through the center of 149th St, to the crossovers north of the station, were abandoned. |

I lived on Courtlandt, off 150th. 578, still there, although changed somewhat. Grandparents owned a grocery at 602.I spent a lot of time at the turnstiles watching the IRT rumble in and out. Quite a surprise when an occasional 7th Ave Exp would come in with Worlds Fair Steinways, which I remembered from the shuttle and always thought they were BMT trains. Little did I realize the BMT cars were up on the El. Liggetts was superb. |
