[PHOTOS] Unusual 3rd Ave el Pics

Nope, not the Manhattan Bridge
image host

image host

The other side of the bridge

Whoa ! Talk about tight headways ! The 3rd Ave local tracks were reputedly not signaled, express tracks were.
That circular object on the right is a cluster light fixture that shown light on the back end of the train in the station.

image host

I see a two door Mercury there. What's that station wagon in front of it, Dodge or Plymouth ?
Also, can anyone ID this station ?

image host

Who needs a railfan window when you have an open storm door. I'll bet no one fell out of the back. Today they would drop their cell phone on the track.
This must have been shortly after the Manhattan section was closed. I see the express track was platformed over.

Your comments and corrections are most welcome. I'm signing off now, my eyebrows are killing me !!!

Yes, it seems that generation valued their lives much more than today and took precautions. Today they would sue the TA for not locking the door shut.

From what I've learned, the Q's were the 3rd Ave expresses, but dead headed in the opposite direction on the local track.
Perhaps that's why that Q was so close to the local.

Thanks. That's what I thought/heard - that they were expresses and deadhaded in one direcction on the local track due to their weight.

Looks like this Q might be in revenue service though, because, if you look at the Q, looks like you can see two kids at the RFW - their eyes just reaching over the window.

Bill. The center track was taken out of service of September 24, 1954. I know from personal observation that work to board it over was well underway in the second half of October 1954. Revenue Third Avenue El service south of 149th Street ended on May 12, 1955. The use of the MUDC's and "Q's" continued until they were replaced by the Steinways on December 15, 1956.

I don't know how long it took to construct the platform over the center track but lets say it took four months. So we are looking at a period from about February 1955 to December 1956.

No. Thru-Express service continued until May 12, 1955. However trains had to switch to the local tracks to stop at 149th Street.

The MUDCs were gone by the 1960s. I didn’t really pay attention, but some sources have mentioned that the MUDCs were removed from service first and the Qs provided service until replaced by the Steinways. I do know that by the summer of 1958 all service was provided by the Steinways since after my father died in July of that year my mother and I had to go to a Social Security office on Tremont Av near 3rd and we took the el to get there and the equipment used was steel IRT cars (at that time I didn’t know the names of the various types of subway equipment).

R-17: I lived in the area until 1959. Do you remember the double kiosks on the northwest side of 149th Street. One was for entrance and one for exit?

There was a Liggett-Rexall Department store on the corner and a whole lot of buses as well.

Morning southbound 3rd Ave Thru-Express trains switched from the center express track to the local track, just north of 149th St. After stopping at the lower level of 143rd St, they used a former non-revenue ramp track to get to the upper level and continue south, like before. PM express trains did the reverse. The trackage from the upper level of 143rd St, through the center of 149th St, to the crossovers north of the station, were abandoned.

Although over the years, many sources have indicated that el structures blight neighborhoods by darkening streets, many photos I have seen including then ones from this group show that the sidewalks where most people walk have more than adequate sunlight.

I lived on Courtlandt, off 150th. 578, still there, although changed somewhat. Grandparents owned a grocery at 602.
I spent a lot of time at the turnstiles watching the IRT rumble in and out. Quite a surprise when an occasional 7th Ave Exp would come in with Worlds Fair Steinways, which I remembered from the shuttle and always thought they were BMT trains. Little did I realize the BMT cars were up on the El.
Liggetts was superb.
