In relation to the skylights, where was the stairway?

It wasn't all that long ago that the staircase from the former s/b local platform to the underpass was still uncovered. Peer into the tunnel just north of the Times Square station on the BMT Broadway line and you can see how the express tracks spread apart and straddle that underpass on either side.

I also remember when there was an original Times Square tile plaque on the platform wall and then I saw it was removed. It was only a few years later that I realized it was moved up to the street level entrance on the south side of 42nd and looks good there.

It shouldn't have been moved from its 1904 location at all. I thought the plaques/tablets and the tile bands of the original IRT stations were landmarked.

Not quite.

The 2 express tracks and the n/b local tracks are east of the stairway.

The s/b local track dips down under the stairway (just after it leaves 49 St) and then ramps back up to enter Times Square (same level as the other tracks).

Not all that long ago it the staircase on the n/b (track 4) that was visible. They have since built a wall in front of it (it may have also been removed - there in no way to tell).

The stairway on the s/b side (track 1) the has been covered over for as far back as I remember (I am 67 so aI remember pretty far back)

I agree but since it remained in the same station area they were probably allowed to move it.

Maybe it will be returned (or a copy used) whenever they do the shuttle realignment project.

Shuttle realignment project?
is this actively going to happen or is it just a projected part of a capital plan.
re: specifics of the realignment - is their an MTA page or another page covering this, and if so do you know of a link?
Thank you.

Someone had posted a link here not that long ago which led to the latest project info. I haven't been able to find it again but from what I read the project will go forward. I don't recall a start date but there was lots of details such as a single wide center platform covering track 2 (the old R.O.W) and track 3.

There might be a better way, but you can find it by starting at the Capital Program Dashboard for Capital Plan 2015–2019 and zooming in on Times Square on the map. Here's what I found: Project T7041404. You might then uncover more details by Googling or searching mta.info for the Project ID.

If I recall the plans as proposed, the T/Sq island platform would only cover the abandoned track 2 trackway. Tks 1 and 3 would be used operating 5 car trains and tk 4 would be abandones completely forever cutting off the shuttle’s access to the west side. With 2 X 5 car shuttles, the passenger capacity of the shuttle would remain the same and all trains would be swapped through the Lex Line.

Track 3 is actually supposed to be abandoned. Tracks 1 and 4 will utilize 6-car trains.

what is the rationale for reducing service to two tracks and eliminating the third?
The shuttle operates between two of the most heavily used stations in the system, and should be prepared to handle any kind of passenger load capacity normal to well above average, for any transportation situation that may arise - again, there seems to be a complete lack of planning/ forward thinking for what future years/ decades may bring in projected volumes of passenger traffic.

As I mentioned, that’s not the info I got. Since there is no connection between tk 4 and the other 3 shuttle tks, trains have to be swapped by partially dismantling the bridge over tk 4 at the T/Sq end in order to get the shuttle train to the mainline. Tk 3, on the other hand has a switch connecting it to tk 1 from which trains can be swapped out with a minimum of difficulty. By eliminating tk 4, the complicated work at the T/Sq end would be eliminated and the train on Tk3 can be easily switched tp tk 1 for transfer to the mainline. As for the train consists since the only line that utilizes other than 5 car units is the Flushing Line, the logical consist would be unitized 5 car trains of either R-62s or R-142s.

If you have ever ridden the T/Sq shuttle, you will notice that tk 4 is the most inconvenient tk for passengers to get to especially at the T/Sq end and many people miss the shuttle on tk 4 when coming from either the IRT mainline or the BMT and end up either taking tk 1 or tk 3 anyhow so the TA probably feels that eliminating tk 4 will not really impact on the passengers anyhow.

But it helps to have 3 tracks (and 3 trains) in case 1 of them is unavailable.

The plan that I have seen most often would have separate loading and unloading platforms at both ends. Each terminal was consist of a single island platform for loading and two side platforms for unloading. There would be two five car trains running on their own tracks. If this were built it would work. Many passengers at Times Square choose not to run over to Track 4 because of the distance and the fact that by the time you get there the train will be go. They simply wait for the train on tracks 1 or 3.

At Times Square, why is the MTA converting the existing 3-track shuttle operation to a 2-track shuttle?

Thanks to Randyo and IRTRedbird33 for your replies.

I see what you mean about track 4 and its access at TS. However, maybe one or more extra ceiling signs with directional arrows for track 4 for BMT & IRT 7th Ave. riders, at the approach to the shuttle would help to innrease use of trains on track 4 & alleviate the acute overcrowding on tracks 1 & 2.

I have seen crowds rushing into the trains for tracks 1 and 3, rather than going around to track 4, creating overcrowding very quickly for these trains (and yes, I have been part of these crowds myself). A directional sign, as a prompt, might help with track 4 access, so trains on tcks. & 2 would not fill to crush capacity so quickly, and so trains on all 3 tcks. if carrying to each's full capacity would ultimately have more capacity than just trains on two tracks.

Also, with three tracks, if two happen to be leaving at the same time (or close to it), from TS for example, there would always be the option for the third train to be at GS - taking some of that passenger volume to TS, with the remainder boarding those next two trains arriving from TS.

And it true as you have stated IRTRedbirdR33 that the plans created back decades ago, did call for a two track island platform arrangement (under the former wooden flooring in the approach corridor). I've always thought that it was good that this was never built, since, over the years, I have seen the massive volume of passengers for trains at GS on all three tracks.

3-9, I agree with your post.
