The 1st five days after this date the R68s saw service on the 6th Avenue-Grand Concourse portion of the D train. After that the R68s wouldn't see service on this portion of the D train until 12/10/88.

It took something like at least four years before the section of the Jamaica el beyond 121st St. was dismantled. I drove along Jamaica Ave. in October of 1088 and the abandoned segment was still intact.

I also saw it in December 1988. I believe it was demolished in 1990.

I think I've seen at least a couple of those R-68s still doing service on the D.

So unfortunate those demolished segments weren't use to fill in the vacant center section of the remaining el.

All of those cars are assigned to the D today.

Wasn't going to happen since the idea of cutting down the El back to Crescent St was being kicked around back at that time ('83-'84) I lived in Woodhaven at that time & petitions & neighborhood committes were making noise to get that done. Thankfully the NIMBYS & real estate interests were ignored & the EL stayed up.

I also lived in Woodhaven at the time and remember that ridiculous idea. Thankfully that idea went nowhere.

Speaking of R68s, I've been getting on at Cortelyou in the morning lately instead of at Newkirk, and the R68s basically crawl through on the express. Yesterday the Q was running express due to track replacement on the local track and the R160 was noticeably faster, even my wife commented on it. We were at USQ in 22 minutes.

That's right, it was demolished in the fall of 1990, except the bridge over the LIRR at 130 St wasn't removed until May 1991.

In '83-'84, they also wanted to cut back the #4 line at 161st St. With graffitti and lack of maintenance, these were dark days for the subway system

I also remember that about the #4 cutback proposal. However, While living in Woodhaven at that time I'd often take the J to work In Manhattan. I'd get on at Woodhaven Blvd midday to some of the most filthy (and almost empty) R-27/30s, or a mixed train of R16-27s. It had filth on top of graffiti, both inside and out, no heat or working fans & many door leafs immobile. On these rolling wrecks, it would be a crap shoot if the train would keep some sort of schedule.
Taking the Q60 Green Bus to the IND was no help either. Wait & wait & wait, then 3 buses would come by. Then there's Woodhaven Blvd Traffic.
As for the J, I always thought of it as a TA plot as in make the service so undesireable, chase away riders & now we have a reason to kill the line, a tactic used by the TA time & time again. Thankfully, it didn't work on that section of the Jamaica Ave El.

The Q60 doesn't run near Woodhaven. Did you mean the Q11 or Q21?

Correct! My Bad...Q11 is what I meant. Q 60 ran on Queens Blvd. Thanks!

It was still over the Van Wyck in 1990.
