Tuscarora Almanac - April 12, 1968 - The Book of Last Runs

BMT Division
This is the last day of operation of the NX Broadway-Sea Beach-Brighton Express which ran non-stop over the express tracks of the Sea Beach Line between 59 Street and Coney Island. This is the first train to do this since BMT Rt. 7 Franklin-Nassau was discontinued in the early fifties.

The NX began service on Monday, November 27, 1967 and ran Monday through Friday only between 57 Street-7 Avenue and Brighton Beach via the Broadway Subway, Canal Street Line, Manhattan Bridge (South Side), Fourth Avenue Subway, Sea Beach and Brighton Lines.

In addition to the express run on the Sea Beach Line trains ran express between 57 Street-7 Avenue in Manhattan and 59 Street- 4 Avenue in Brooklyn, also bypassing Dekalb Avenue.

There were only five trains in each direction. This was dictated by the length of the absolute block on the Sea Beach express tracks which extended between the 8 Avenue Interlocking and the Kings Highway Interlocking.

Lengthy delays at Coney Island made the service unattractive and also there was the tendency to run the trains as locals on the Sea Beach if the regular N was late.

Schedule was as follows:

Lv: Brighton Beach ; 723, 744, 756, 808, and 821 AM

Lv: 57 Street; 447, 459, 511, 523 and 536 PM.

Running time was supposed to be 45 minutes.

A No. 5 Lexington Avenue Express derailed near the 68th Street station at the end of the PM rush. The case was a broken rail. The derailed cars were R-29 8696-8697 and R-28 7889. There were no injuries and service was restored for the morning rush.

April 12 happened to be Good Friday in 1968, so one might say the NX was crucified.:)

I never got to ride the NX, but I heard it was mostly empty except for the railfan window.

I rode it once, at the railfan window of course, and yes it was mostly empty. I was 12 or 13. I believe it discharged at Coney Island and didn't continue to Brighton and was R27 cars.

I heard that NX trains weren't exactly crush loaded.

I should have continued to Brighton since that was the advertised service.

I've said it before, and to me, it bears repeating- the entire existence of the NX occurred while my mother was pregnant with me!!

Unlikely. We lived in Flushing and Mom worked in Kew Gardens at the time, and I know of no family connection that woulda brought us to Brighton Line. So maybe I should have made my handle Arnine-based?

Well, if you were slightly or greatly surprised to see a 40-year old pregnant woman on the 7 or the Queens IND in late '67-early '68, we may have met, in a fashion.

It's too bad they didn't just end it at Coney Island. From what others have said about it, it was delays in sending it 'round the bend to Brighton Beach that doomed it.

The TA probably wanted to give passengers at Brighton Bch an additional service to supplement the rush hour QBs that gave Brighton Line passengers Bway service that was lost with the creation of the QJ.

My first ride on the I Love Lucy line was on May 11, 1968. We boarded an Ethel at Kew Gardens and since it pulled in on the local track, I thought, here we go again. When it stopped at 75th Ave., I was about to throw a screaming fit. 8th Ave. Express, my ass. Then we switched to the express track and it got interesting. Those old timers flew to Roosevelt Ave. and then to Queens Plaza. The motorman goosed it as we ripped past 36th St., bull and pinion gears wailing away at F# above middle C. Redemption of sorts for the Ethel.

As a 7 year old in 1975, I was impressed with the E express with Slants running on it. The angled nose just made them so "express" in my mind. I was sad to see them spending their later days on the W local...

The slants were a worthy successor to the R-10s on the Abbott. I rode on one such train up CPW on Easter Sunday in 1978 and only wish I could have timed it. That train SMOKED!! Those local stops were blurs.
