Sheepshead Bay closed exit |
|
Posted by Union Tpke on Mon Apr 15 06:14:33 2019 According to station reporter, "prior to the 1998 renovation, there was a small passageway behind the F/T booth area that led to a restaurant and small arcade of stores, it is now sealed." This would be located at the north end of the station near Sheepshead Bay Road. Can any of you corroborate this claim or provide more details about where this was located? Thanks. |

Before I moved out of the area in 2004, the pizza joint's back entrance led to this passageway. I think the only other place there, IIRC, was a barbershop, then the passageway led to a door to the street. |

It was a private passageway from the token control area behind a few stores that exited to the street about 100 feet west of East 15th Street between two stores. When it was open before 1978, it led directly to the B1 bus stop which was behind the B36 bus stop at East 15 Street. The B36 was bound for Sea Gate going down Neptune Ave and the B1 went to Manhattan Beach. So if you wanted the B1 and it was raining you could wait for it inside the passageway. You could also wait for the B 36 inside the station without walking through the passageway, I believe it closed when they renovated the station. |

Before Nov 1978, the B21 to Knapp Street stopped in front of the B1, not the B36. The B36 to Sea Gate stopped on E 16 Street where the B49 and B4 now stop. So you could wait inside for the B21 and B1, not the B36 and B1 as Istated. But after 1978, the B21 stop became the stop for the B36 to Avenue U. |

Well, not many used the B1 that ran every 20 minutes. And the lighting could have been better. But it wasn't much different from other passageways at that time. |
