Woodlawn Road is not named after a former railroad.

Was Woodlawn Road a former name of the cemetery driveway?

Thank you. After I found out about this line's existence (which was in 1987), I went out dozens of times to look at it. While the stretch from Fingerboard Road to the expressway, and then from the expressway to Robin Road was destroyed in 1987, remnants remained in Rosebank for years after that- the St. John's Avenue trestle even got a paintjob and a NYSDOT number sticker in the early 1990s, the Virginia Road trestle lasted until early 1999, and one girder from an trestle at Willow Avenue lasted until sometime in the 1990s. Some embankment was visible at that spot (Willow Avenue) until the 1990s as well. I think it was a travesty that the City and State allowed this route, and the North Shore route, to die.

Thanks for the info.

I remember that solitary girder for the Willow Ave trestle.

As Mr. RedbirdR33 pointed out, it's the former name of Bainbridge Avenue.

Whenever I traveled to Woodlawn, the station sign read simply “Woodlawn” and not “Woodlawn Road.” Although there are photos of the Lo-Vs with plate signs reading “Woodlawn Rd-Jerome Av,” when I rode them in the 1950s and early 1960s, the signs merely read “Woodlawn-Jerome Av.” Why the B of T and TA went back to including the word “Road” on the R types’ Woodlawn destination signs I don’t know.

Much as I also hate to see a fully electrified, grade-separated, ROW get abandoned then totally obliterated, there's no hiding the fact that, at the end, the longest those trains got was 2 cars long. The only way it would have been worthwhile now is if it had promoted greater development, in these days where mass transit is popular, but I'm not even sure if the current SIRT does that.

Staten Island has needed a viable rail link either to Jersey or Brooklyn (or both) Look at the housing built in the period after the VN bridge opened.

Probably won't happen in any of our lifetimes. I don't think a lot of SI residents would want their suburban-like county to become attractive to large numbers of "city folk".

It did not. Lily Pond Avenue occupies the ROW today.

The Toll Plaza Myth (was SIRT South Beach Photos)

Posted by Spider-Pig on Sat Mar 30 11:01:46 2019, in response to Re: [PHOTOS] SIRT Abandoned South Beach Branch, posted by Spider-Pig on Thu Mar 28 23:31:28 2019.

It seems that a lot of sources claim that the Verrazano toll plaza was built in the way of the South Beach Branch. It wasn't.

PROFF

That is a 1951 aerial photo. Click on "Map Type" in the upper right hand corner and change to the 1996 aerial. The view will fade from 1951 to 1996, and you can see that the Lily Pond Avenue underpass is perfectly aligned with the old ROW. The 1996 aerial also has the original toll plaza fully intact, and it shows that no part of it occupies the old ROW.

In fact, the underpass could have been used to restore the South Beach Branch, provided that the street were narrowed and the interchange reconfigured.

It wasn’t quite the toll plaza itself but was still in the area of the widened portion of the expwy coming off the toll plaza.

As I've established in that post, it exactly corresponds to the present day ROW of Lily Pond Avenue where it was extended through the expressway to Tompkins Avenue.

What's also interesting is that even though much of the ROW was filled in in 1987 (which I personally remember), the 1996 aerial image shows the ROW otherwise unencroached upon- and the old South Beach-Midland beach trolley ROW still clearly distinguishable!!
