CNJ RDC #552 at Keansburg NJ station, c. 1960

Posted by Olog-hai on Sun Mar 24 10:32:56 2019

Or so the person providing the photo indicated. (Hope it stays up.)

This railroad branch (to Atlantic Highlands, and once extended through Sandy Hook) is now part of the Henry Hudson Rail Trail. But imagine if NJT were still running it as a rail line today, how busy it'd be.

You can't go wrong with an RDC. But you can with an SPV :(

What would have been so hard about building the SPV2000 in the same way the RDC was? Not like they had to reinvent the concept of DMU.

Oh well. The Highlands Branch was gone by the time any more new Budd DMUs came around IIRC.

Well, the date looks plausible, based on the parked cars. The latest I can identify, at left, is a 1961 Rambler American.

I agree. Of course, Budd could still have used the Metroliner/Amfleet body shell design for SPV-2000, while sticking with the tried-and-true RDC mechanicals.

I don't know how Budd managed to fuck up the SPV. But some of the RR owners did not do them any favors by chopping off crankshafts and de-powering 1 truck to eliminate the fireman's position in the cab due to union rules.

I would say in that case the union rules were the problem...

Not every RR required a fireman on RDCs or SPVs. AFAIK, the NYC and later Metro North did not.
