March 24, 1900: Mayor Robert Van Wyck breaks ground outside City Hall for the first NYC subway, the IRT. The original (Contract 1) route would extended northward to two Bronx terminals - 242nd St. and Bronx Park. Those routes opened between 1904 and 1908. Contract 2 took the line southward to Manhattan's southern tip and Atlantic Ave. in Brooklyn. This route opened between 1905 and 1908.
With the exception of the original Bronx Park terminal, all of these lines are in daily service today.
