Strange Acoustical Resonances Gives Current Subway Cars an R9 Bearing Whine Sound at Union Square

Posted by heypaul on Sat Mar 23 13:44:36 2019

In the last couple of weeks I noticed two R160's sound like an R9 when accelerating and braking at 14 St Union Square. I thought it weird. Yesterday I was at Union Square, protesting the war in Viet Nam. On my way home, I heard the sounds again and recorded them. Standing on the downtown platform, the sounds are most noticeable when an uptown express or downtown local pulls in. Is there some sort of resonance in the station that gives this effect?

I've noticed it as well! Very interesting and one of a kind.

Are the sounds something recent? How do you explain it?

Those are new welded rails that you are hearing. They are being installed across the system. Any equipment that runs over them will cause that sound.

Will a domestic or imported cheese be served with that whine?

Interesting. I'll guess that as the rails wear, that sound will dissapate.

On YouTube, Orion V 9952 posited that "The rails received treatment from a rail grinder that makes small grooves thus making that sound when running over. Helps with traction apparently."

I'm not satisfied with either of these explanations.

I hear that sound all the time on NJT and Amtrak, and in the same places. The fine grooves improve traction.

I first noticed this on the downtown 6 between 14th and BB a few years ago. The sound eventually faded as the rails wore and you don't hear it anymore. It is very obvious at USQ on the Q now but you don't hear it anywhere else.

What condition at Union Square caused them to grind the rails?

I visited New York a few weeks ago and had just exited an uptown Q at Union Square and heard coming from the direction of the downtown tracks what sounded like an R9 leaving the station. Now I know that it wasn’t an EE.

I've also heard the same whining "traction sound" at 71st & Continental, IIRC - trains on the outbound side, while I was waiting for a train to Manhattan.

Maybe its Byford's plan to save seconds when pulling out of certain stations.

Not only that but during the last few years of EE operation, R-9s were banned from it.

Yup.
I heard that sound on the E and F in Queens.
Im guessing its new welded rails installed along those routes.

It's the sound from the rails being ground & reshaped. It goes away after time.

Hmmm....didn’t know that. Why were they banned from the EE?
Reminds me of another subject you mentioned from some time ago that i wanted to ask you about. That museum R1/9 used to make QB service in the midearly 70s. iIRC you mentioned that it returned to CI as an N. How was it signed up? Was there an N designation in the bulkhead?

I heard it at 14th and 6th recently, apparently after some track replacement. It doesn't really sound like an R9 though.

There was an incident in which a EE developed door trouble at Lex/60 St and was taken O/S. Somewhere in the tube S/O the 11 St Cut it developed an unrelated problem and blocked service for quite a while. As a result, 2 things occurred. Firs it that whenever an o/S train had to go through a river tube, no other trains were to be allowed behind it until it completely cleared the tube. The second was that all R-1/9s were banned from the EE service which was a typical NYCTA knee jerk reaction since the BO train was a SMEE. As for the museum R-1/9, when it ran on the QB it was equipped with the old BMT numbered route signs so it read “1/Brighton Local.” on the rare occasions I sent it down the Sea Beach it read “4/Sea Beach Express."

Thanks for the great info! However, I seem to recall the bulkhead had "QB" and presumably there was also "N" on the bulkhead roller.

Well if the bulkhead sign had letters then it would have had an N but when I saw it , it had numbers.
