There's no way you could know that from simply witnessing the act. Self-preservation is the #1 instinct people have. Strictly speaking, it's more like genetic preservation, so it includes family and so forth, but basically yes. And statistically, you aren't doing that either. And if you did, there's a good chance it would mean the firefighters who trained for this now have to rescue two people instead of one.
