Sorry, I meant the connection of Nassau St. to the Montague. The R still runs 75 foot cars. But my understanding is that they can't divert to the Eastern Division in an emergency.

Nope. There's a huge sign at the T/O's end going Manhattan bound, for the lineup box, saying no 75' allowed onto Nassau Street.

You could put 30 or 40 people standing into a tall-roof Sprinter or Ford Transit van without seats leaving a center lane clear and be around max GVWR, it would be illegal of course.

But great for running illegals to avoid current US immagration laws.

This is SUBCHAT.
NO "SLINGS AND ARROWS"..Just looking for you SUBS to take it there and leave it there.

HOWEVER..67ft cars should be examined Again.
The 110b had different truck placement that didnt allow for Eastern Division use.
The swing was just wide as the 75ft cars.

From an engineering drawing on nycsubway.org it appears the axles on the Standards were 6'6" apart although it's hard to read:

On both the SMEE's and the NTT's they're 6'10" apart.
Interestingly, on those experimental 67' R110B's they're 7'1" apart.

If you mean distance between truck centers, here's the info:
Standards: 47'0"
60' cars (both SMEE and NTT): 44'7"
75' cars: 54'0"
R110B: 47'0"

Yes, that's what I wanted.

The R110B stuck with the BMT Standard truck base because they knew it would work on the Eastern Division, such as the Canarsie tunnel curves, the Myrtle cut, and the nasty Crescent Street curve.

I think it safe to assume on a 67' car:

1) you cannot have a truck base < 47' that can run in the East due to end overhang
2) you cannot have an open gangway at all with a truck base <= 47', it must be longer.

So there will not be another "universal" 67' car.

That controls the end of car overhang.

The distance between the trucks controls the belly overhang.

If the distance between trucks on the 57 footers is 55 ft that would mean that the trucks on open gangway cars can be moved a bit closer to the cars ends and not compromise the clearances in the subway infrastructure.

there should be some uniformity in regard to the subway fleet - the 75 foot cars could not operate on the Eastern Division due to clearance problems. That mistake should not be repeated. The cars should be designed to go anywhere in the system - of course, A division only for A division, B division only for B division. A shortage on one route could then be easily covered by any surplus on another. Also, with less variables, spare parts to make repairs would be more readily available.

All of which seems to mean there is a need to relax curves, or at least shave some tunnel walls. Most are barely below street level, so no miracles are required. If the problem exists in under-river tunnels it may not be reasonable to fix it at those spots. There are some ridiculous curves in the system, each causes wear and slowdowns hundreds of times per day, tens of thousands of times per year.

It all depends what the MTA wants to do. If open gangway cars can be safely operated with the existing truck centers of a normal 60 footer which may be the case, then there will be no problem.
