But those tiles at 23rd-Ely still look as good as the day they were put up!

Does anyone know how Ely Ave., Queens is pronounced?

Ely, NV and Ely, Cambridgeshire, UK are both pronounced eelee.

EE-lie.

I speak as one born in Astoria at a time when old-timers still used that name.

Yep. EE-lie was the way it was pronounced. Like that Three Dog Night record..."EE-Lie's commin..." Sounding the same in both instances.

I always heard conductors pronouncing it "eeLIE". Seems good to me...

The freighter hit TWO ferryboats at once? OMG that could have been awful. Since I've never heard of this before, I guess this didn't end too tragically (no General Slocum here...)

And thanks as always!!

I would like to find out more about this collision. Nevertheless those Staten Island ferryboats were tough.
