SouthShore question

Posted by kp5308 on Sat Mar 16 23:13:53 2019

Is THIS actually have a shot at getting done? Will scenes such as these finally become a thing of the past?

This is their unusual plan to realign the tracks to the side of 10thth Avenues, then? instead of using the CSX/South reroute?

I don't see full funding mentioned here.

I'm not sure if the Michigan City relocation is part of the double track project. You remindme I should check in w/ an old compadre who lives there. I amjazzed about the West Lake banch--restoring passenger service on the old Monon.

Well, the double tracks are supposed to go to East Michigan Avenue in Michigan City, and that's the easternmost extremity of the double-track project, which would encompass the street-running segment.

There used to be a double-track segment at the 11th Street station.

That is why I mention "does it have a shot". I do not recall any past reports on doing something about getting the trains out of the street sounding this hopeful. I bring this up because VP Mike Pence & Governor Eric Holcomb are solidly behind this.

Fromwhat I have heard from ny friend who lives there (though not recently) is that no one can get consensus for any of the several proposals.

as a former rider, and fan, I try to stay up to date on CSS&SB--actually went 11 years ago to a centenary conference/celebration in SB which included a very nice shops tour in MC the next day. One of these days I will paint, glaze, repower my brass HO cars and Little Joe. I hope to be around for the opening of the West Lake branch.

Best solution: double track the street running :). Olog posted a pic proving it once was that way for at least the station...

There's been talk of eliminating street running through Michigan City for some time now. There used to be street running through East Chicago and South Bend. I remember when trains came all the way into downtown South Bend. The East Chicago Bypass opened two months before I was born.

Question for you: How is the South Shore split? I have read various versions & I'm looking for valid answers. This is what I'm going with until corrected. Please provide links to any changes if possible:

NICTD owns ALL the track, (freight only mileage included) owns & maintains the MUs and all associated hardware (signaling, stations, buildings, etc.) & is responsible for dispatching. It is no longer classified as an interurban, losing that designation when Venango(?) went bankrupt in '89 & sold everything off. NICTD is classified as a Commuter Railroad.

Anacostia owns the diesels, all CSS freight cars & little else. It is responsible for all inventory associated with the freight operation. Additionally it is billed by NICTD for shop space at Michigan City to maintain the Geeps, for track space it uses to serve customers & for dispatching services. Anacostia pays the freight side management, office staff, mechanics & freight crews directly. CSS is classified as a Class III Railroad.

Additions/corrections are welcome from anyone that reads this.

Trains have to double back to get to the airport. There is talk of bringing South Shore trains to Union Station downtown. The owner of the former depot says he's all for it.

I'm not even talking about that. I'm saying even to the airport, there is like one rush hour train a day, plus few and far between at other times.

NICTD is a tenant of Metra (Electric) on all track from 115th Street/Kensington north in Chicago.

actually, I believe NICTD is a tenant as ar as the State Line (at least Hegewisch) as the former Kensington & Eastern passed to Metra when they bought the IC Electric.

FWIW, Kensington today is a shadow of its former self. The original Michigan Central passenger route used IC from there to Central Station until Al Perlman moved MC trains to the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern (mainline NYC) and La Salle Street Station in the 50s.

If I recall from reading a South Shore timetable the last time I was there thee service to South Bend operated every 2 hours. Not great but not bad either.

Western Indiana never had year round DST. Western Indiana is and always was part of the Central time zone and always observed DST. The rest of Indiana was part of the Eastern Time Zone and didn’t observe DST at all. They began observing DST with the rest of the country (except most of Arizona, Puerto Rico, and Hawai‘i) in 2007.

The trackage rights part I knew about. From memory that is why CSS&SB went to 1500 VDC from the unusual 6600 VAC to conform with the IC voltage to reach Randolph St. I'm looking for a clarification on the ownership of the 115th St. to SB trackage.

OK, thanks. It’s been a while since I was there and I know that part of Indiana did not observe DST bu I didn’t remember which part, which is why as Amtrak passengers we were advised to set our watches back before we actually reached the Central time zone.
