I guess the brain trust felt they were mechanically good enough to run one section in service and trust the motormen not to gap the train over a switch. But in those days in order to get disciplined you had to do something really bad so the motorman wasn't afraid to operate with lots of confidence and I'm sure fewer grade timers were out there.Looking at those pics and all the years I worked those stretches and the M shuttle to/from B'way/Myrtle middle, too bad I can't turn back the hands of time and operate those gems, the Standards to Chambers St., the Q's and gate cars to Jay St...... |

Posted by randyo on Fri Mar 15 21:24:36 2019, in response to Re: subchat back,, posted by Bill from Maspeth on Fri Mar 15 19:34:17 2019. On the prototype Bluebird unit, there was a button board in the middle (C) section similar to the one on the steels where the C/R operated from. The Chicago artics also had a similar arrangement. The production Bluebirds had outdoor controls and steps that were sort of built into the anticlimber. Some later photos of the Bluebird seem to show indoor controls resembling the R-16 type “faucet handles” but none of the phots show a really close up view of them. What the photos do show is that the outside door controls were removed and covered over. |
