Jamaica Line Removed Exits?

Posted by Union Tpke on Wed Mar 13 14:42:07 2019

Did there used to be exits at the west ends of Crescent and Norwood and the east end of Cleveland. I thought I had read this somewhere. Thanks.

I think they were like Alabama Ave- built with one entrance/exit.

At one time there were Fare Controls and exits at both ends of the El stations above Jamaica Ave.
Some or most where exit only had "Iron Maiden" entrances.
Then crime caused complete removal of exits/entrances and fair Control structures.

To which corners did the exits at Elderts Lane for 75th, and the exits at Forest Parkway for 85th go to? I know the ones at 102nd went to the western corners.

I can only guesstimate, mid '70's to early '80's.

You can find the answers to some of the questions you've been asking here in the late-1930s and mid-1980s tax photos. For example, here's a since-demolished staircase at the southwest corner of Eldert Lane and Jamaica Avenue, and here's a recent Street View capture for comparison.

The exits at 102 St went to the eastern corners.

It could be because 104 St is about halfway between the east exit of the Woodhaven Blvd station at 95 St and the west (and only) exit of the 111 St Station at 111 St. 102 St would be too close to Woodhaven Blvd.

I doubt that considering the station was originally called 102nd Street.

If that were the case, the same could be said about the Fulton Street Line at Rockaway Boulevard with how the eastern stairs are in between 96th & 97th Streets and how the 104th Street station still has its stairs that go down to 102nd Streets.

OFF TOPIC: I don’t get why 88th Street is the only station on that part of the line that doesn’t have its second exit open anymore.

No, these were single ended stations very similar to the Myrtle and 3rd Ave (Bay Ridge) stations that were extended for subway trains in the early 1900's.

The Forest Parkway exit only had stairs on the northwest corner. This exit was closed and removed in 1989.

They didn't. They 104th St was the 24/7 exit, as was 85th St at Forest Parkway and 75th St at Elderts Lane. They simply removed the exit only/iron maiden mezzanines. I never knew a single soul who used Forest Parkway as an entrance. By the late 80's it was just a urine soaked hangout for teens to smoke weed.

Looking at Google Maps, the provisions for the staircase exits from the mezzanine may appear to be too small in width for pedestrian traffic, particularly on the southwest corner on Liberty Avenue at 86th Street. It would not be feasible to install one on the northwest corner, as it would land right into a tiny park plaza and very narrow sidewalk, and too close to the roadway with a small curbside.

Not exactly. Really early cuz I remember the wooden barriers on the stairs at platform level were already up by March.

Apparently lots of nasty stuff was going on in the closed headhouses at Forest Parkway, 102nd St, and Elderts Lane, which contributed to these three areas' complete removals.
